BJP's dubious role in 2009 Rajya Sabha polls again refresh in peoples' mind | Notification issued for Rajya Sabha elections | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 21: With the issuance of notification by the Election Commission of India to conduct elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir, ghost of 2009 Rajya Sabha elections again refresh in the mind of the people of Jammu region. In 2009 Rajya Sabha, one of the senior central BJP leader, who is now enjoying important position in the government headed by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at New Delhi, had directed local BJP leaders to spare some votes to ensure victory of National Conference candidate Dr Farooq Abdullah who along with Mohammad Shafi Uri were party candidates at that time. Although BJP had supported an independent candidate at that time, yet the candidate . failed to get adequate votes. Instead of ensure victory of party candidate in Rajya Sabha elections, state BJP leadership was more concerned about victory of NC candidates at that time because a central leader had mounted pressure on BJP to ensure victory of NC candidates. Newly elected MLA from Udhampur, Pawan Gupta had recently exposed BJP's double standard. Gupta who remained with BJP for decades together had alleged, "During the election to the Rajya Sabha seats in J&K in the year 2009 in which BJP supported candidate AV Gupta came into election fray, two votes from BJP came short in favour of supported candidate", he said, adding that the issue of cross voting was under carpeted at that time. Meanwhile the Election Commission today issued notification for four Rajya Sabha seats of Jammu and Kashmir, going to polls onFebruary 7. Returning Officer for Biennial Election and the Secretary of J&K Legislative Assembly, stated that as per the EC schedule, January 28 is the last date for filing nominations, while scrutiny of nomination forms will be taken up on January 27 and January 31 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Polling will be held between 0900 hrs and 1600 hrs, the official added. Four Rajya Sabha seats held by Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prof Saifuddin Soz, Muhammad Shafi Uri and Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri are falling vacant by the end of second week of February. |
