Udhampur Mla waiting in wings: Let situation crystallize | RS biennial elections & its anticipations | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 21: While the chase to win representation in the Rajya Sabha gets set in motion as secretary J&K Legislative Assembly M Ramzan today issued three notices for biennial election for 4 Rajya Sabha (RS) seats from Jammu and Kashmir State, this has led to fast packing up of differences between the Bhartiya Janta Party as well as Peoples Democratic Party to announce a coalition government soon. Under such circumstances as both the parties are believed to be eyeing for all the four RS seats , this certainly has called for luring in of the independents candidates by both to join the bandwagon for which BJP and PDP is working tirelessly. In this context , speaking to Early Times, Independent MLA from Udhampur Pawan Gupta says that since the situation is still fluid , he is watching the developments to take the practical shape before he takes his call for either going with the government of sitting in the opposition. "Presently the situation is fluid. I am waiting for it to crystallize and let the transparency surface. Thereafter only I can announce my verdict on it," said Pawan Gupta, though expressing desire that his preferential duty in all circumstances would be to usher Udhampur into new era of development and prosperity. "My foremost requirement is to generate funds for my constituency that have been neglected by the erstwhile governments. For that, if I would have to take a liberal step anywhere, I won't hesitate. My constituency needs money for development and for that funds come from the government," said Gupta apparently giving a hint that he would be joining the government bandwagon of coalition as soon the things mature. When asked to specify which political party suits his comfort level to be in the government, Gupta spoke about his own political ideology which he entrusted to that of Jan Sangh and Bhartiya Janta party , but said that he would clinically watch the upkeep of the beliefs taken along by the party before committing his alignment to the political group. As per the present situation while both Congress and NC don't have the required number of seats to elect their candidates to the Rajya Sabha, BJP and PDP on its own can go for one seat only as in 87 member Legislative Assembly, at least 44 is minimum required to clinch two berths. There is a strong possibility of the PDP (28) forming a government with the BJP (25), provided the latter makes some concessions to the former on the issues of Article 370, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and pending power projects. If that happens, the PDP-BJP combine will be assured of three of the four seats, and perhaps even the fourth if these parties mobilise the two-member People's Conference of Sajjad Lone and the five Independents. The possibility of NC and the Congress to snatch one seat remains on the ability of persuasion by Congress towards NC which has three more seats than the Congress with roping in the Independents, the fourth berth could go its way. Pawan Gupta, the independent MLA from Udhampur broke away from BJP as soon the party announced the ticket for Pawan Khajuria overlooking his credentials. Gupta made a strong comeback by winning the Udhampur seat giving a jolt to the party. However, if sources privy to the BJP are to be believed, Gupta has been already roped in by the BJP as its 26th MLA and is waiting for the government formation. Gupta may get a ministerial berth also if BJP-PDP combine materialises. |
