RS polls: Manhas, Madhav likely to be BJP candidates; PDP to field Beg, Kaul | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 21: Former BJP State president and senior Party leader Shamsher Singh Manhas and Party national general secretary and RSS ideologue Ram Madhav are likely to emerge as BJP candidates for Rajya Sabha the elections of which are to be held on February 7. According to sources, both Manhas and Ram Madhav are among the front runners for the two Rajya Sabha seats as BJP candidates from J&K. While Manhas is a State subject, Madhav is not a State Subject; But the Party High Command has also shown its willingness to clear the candidature of these two candidates for two RS seats in the State, sources added. Manhas who has been president of the J&K BJP, has never contested Assembly election and this time despite the Modi wave he preferred to campaign for Party candidates instead of joining poll fray and the Party High Command will not ignore his loyalty and will definitely give him credit for the same. Sources said Madhav being a strong RSS man who is also incharge of J&K State will be sent to RS from the State to make him more active in State politics. The Party High Command has also given its go ahead to the two candidates for the two RS seats in the State. However BJP has not cleared whether it will contest all the four seats or field candidates for two seats only w leaving other two seats for its ally in state coalition which the Party has yet to choose, sources added. Sources said BJP is still grappling with the post poll alliance issue in the State and has not ruled out of joining hands either with PDP or National Conference in formation of the coalition Government in the State. It may be recalled that BJP has 25 seats in 87 member State Assembly while PDP which is the largest Party has 28 members. The NC has 15 members while Congress has 12 members. Besides there are also six independents including one CPI (M) Legislator in the House. The BJP in case of settling a deal with PDP or NC can ensure two RS Seats for the Party while two seats can go to its ally. The Party is also claiming the support of five independents taking its tally to 30, sources said. Sources said PDP is likely to filed former NC MP and senior leader Dr Mehboob Beg and Sameer Kaul. Dr Beg who resigned from NC during the Assembly elections after his defeat in Lok Sabha poll at the hands of PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti had resigned from the Party after accusing its senior leader and former Finance Minister for Party's debacle in Lok Sabha elections. Sources said that in case there is a tie up between BJP and PDP, Congress and NC may also join hands to get at least one RS seat. The two Parties may field former Union Minister and leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad to ensure his victory, sources added. |
