BJP's Delhi poll debacle may not have any impact on J&K
2/11/2015 11:23:37 PM
Will the defeat of the BJP in Delhi As
sembly poll have some impact on the
political developments in Jammu and Kashmir ? Will the crushing defeat of the BJP in Delhi have some impact on the formation of the Government in Jammu and Kashmir ? Well possibilities for such developments seem to be bleak because the BJP and the PDP seem to be committed to form the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir where the Assembly poll, held in December, had thrown up a hung House.
Yes, if some impact can be expected it can be in the big brotherly attitude of the BJP vis-à-vis the PDP.Prior to the declaration of poll results in Delhi BJP used to be viewed with fear in Jammu and Kashmir. It was so because people and political leaders were of the impression that Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, was destined to change the economy and politics of India. No doubt the BJP's loss in the Delhi Assembly election may not have any direct bearing on the policies of Modi led Government,it cannot,at the sametime, seek several concessions from the PDP in their bid for forming the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir.Another impact can be witnessed in the shape of weakening of Modi wave in the region of Jammu where his wave had helped the BJP to win 25 seats,a feat never achieved by the BJP or the erstwhile Jana Sangh in the Assembly election.
As far as the Kashmir valley is concerned majority of people in the valley continue to be unfazed by either the Modi wave or lack of it.That the Modi wave had failed to cross into Kashmir was evident when the BJP failed to win a single seat out of 46 in the Kashmir valley in the recent Assembly election. As such BJP's loss may not have a ny impact on political developments in the Kashmir valley.Political pundits are of the opinion that now onwards Modi has to be careful in handling his colleagues in the BJP.
It is time that Modi tames all those who indulge in Ghar Vaapsi programme or who cry loud in favour of the Hindutava agenda for the BJP led NDA Government. He should tame those crying in support of building Ram temple.Let all these controversial issues are kept under the carpet if Modi wants to help the BJP in registering its presence in West Bengal and in regaining power in Bihar where the Assembly elections are round the corner. That Modi has remained reticent on such controversial issues even when senior BJP leaders, aided by those in the VHP and other organisations, dished out highly provocative statements which had the potential of triggering communal tension and riots.Modi has been doing exceptionally well as Prime Minister but all the gains he has achieved in eight months were being frittered away by the nature of controversies being triggered by senior leaders of Sangh Parivaar.
As far as Jammu and Kashmir state is concerned the BJP needs not revise its plan on forming the Government in alliance with the PDP.Before the Delhi Assembly poll the BJP had an invincible face which could have helped it to extract a number of concessions from the PDP for forming the Government. That invincibility image stands shattered following the BJP's debacle in Delhi Assembly poll. Hence the PDP may no longer treat the BJP as its big brother but as an equal partner in the Government formation.
Therefore, the BJP has to tread cautiously and accommodate PDP's views and suggestions. Agreed that peoples' anger against Modi is limited to Delhi only but the BJP has to be careful in sharing power with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir. Atleast it can claim that it was under Modi that the BJP was able to perform a miracle by sharing power, for the first time,in Jammu and Kashmir. If the BJP-PDP coalition rule provides good governance and is able to promote political stability, law and order and progress in various sectors of industry, agriculture, horticulture, which could resolve the problem of unemployment the success story in Jammu and Kashmir could help the BJP in regaining power in Bihar and registering its presence in West Bengal where the Assembly elections are round the corner.
Success of PDP-BJP coalition rule could result in success in alliances between national and regional parties. And it would be too early for the PDP to treat the BJP or Modi a spent-up force.
