Avalanche kills Skiing guide at Kungdori

BARAMULLA, Feb 11: One person was killed in an avalanche in Kangdori heights in Gulmarag Ski resort here in North Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday afternoon. According to reports panic gripped the famous Ski resort of Gulmarg when a skiing guide came under a heavy snow avalanche on Wednesday. Gulmarg Ski resort becomes the star attraction for tourists especially skiers from abroad and for domestic skiers, as the higher reaches experienced a fresh spell of snowfall on Sunday, said sources. Sources told Early Times over the phone that Bashir Ahmad Bakshi 27, son of Nazir Ahmad Bakshi R/O Tangmarg died on the spot. The man who died was a local skiing guide, when an avalanche hit him near Trahjan Afarwat mountain in this world-famous skiing resort Gulmarag at 1:55 pm on Wednesday afternoon.A senior official from tourism department told early times that, "the warning was already issued for skiing in the area, a local guide died who came under a snow avalanche in world famous ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday. Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Rescue team swung into action immediately after the avalanche struck the avalanche prone area and managed to recover Bakshi's dead body, who was working as a skiing guide.Official said that, after hearing the news we immediately dispatched our men and machinery to the heli-skiing area but all efforts to save Bakshi proved futile. As of now there is no report of any one going missing after the avalanche hit the area , however rescue operation is going on as a precautionary measure and all hotels in Gulmarg are being thoroughly checked to see if anyone else was missing.Official said that, even the J&K Tourism department had issued warnings and advisories to the skiers not to move in the prohibited zone, but unfortunately the foreign tourists did not bother for it and they, " Challenge the danger". However early Times have learnt from sources that district administration had already issued an avalanche warnings in past and advised the general public not to venture in avalanche prone areas. it is pertinent to mention here that, " On Jan 24 yesteryear a Swiss national died and five of his associates had to be rescued when an avalanche hit the Ski resort of Gulamarag between Kongdoori and Afferwath. The slain tourist was identified as Aruon Rioyer of Switzerland. These three tourists came under an avalanche at Hapath Khod area of Gulmarag in North Kashmir when they had ignored the warning and had gone for skiing in the area.
