LC polls: PDP to follow same line as RS polls for selecting candidates | New faces to be sent to Upper House too | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 11: With announcement of dates for upcoming Legislative Council elections in state, political parties having major stakes have begun giving final shape to the names to be fielded who have already been shortlisted. The PDP which is likely to get a lion's share as per numerical strength will follow same line of action in making a choice of its candidates to be sent to Upper House as it did for Rajya Sabha elections. The political strategy for contesting the LC polls will also unfold shortly and most likely would be on the same pattern as witnessed in RS polls.LC polls have been scheduled for March 2 for 11 seats which are falling vacant in the Upper House on account of completion of tenure of members. Sources within the party said the high command is firm this time in making a choice of candidates which would fetch the party solid gains in future in both the regions of the state. Both Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and a couple of front line leaders are of considered opinion not to repeat the names who were fielded last time for LC polls, instead bring in fresh and new faces to infuse a new look of party in the House. Sources said this strategy of bringing in new yet enthused lot of PDP leaders who have been working relentlessly in their constituencies for years , no matter they did not succeed in Assembly elections. Sources said most of the names which are under serious consideration of the party are those who have been defeated by a narrow margin in Assembly elections in Kashmir Valley. The party high command is cognizant of the fact these candidates sweated it out for Assembly polls and gave a tough fight to the opponents. Even though many of these candidates lost by a slender margin, their hard work enabled PDP to gain much hold on the ground level, sources said, adding that in order to reward these people the high command has made up its mind and their entry into the Upper House is almost certain. In Jammu region too, sources further said instead of following run of mill pattern a different line would be followed by the leadership this time. A couple of people who may be fielded will not be those whom party has been projecting for some years traditionally. This time here too it will be some new people whom leadership thinks they are important for nourishing the party politically in the long term. A couple of people have been shortlisted already who are new faces yet important in some ways, sources added. As per EC schedule announced on Tuesday, the notification for holding the polls to 11 seats will be issued on February 12, whereas the last date for filing nomination papers while scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on February 19.Of the 11 seats, eight vacancies have fallen or are falling vacant due to completion of the term by the members. Three other seats have fallen vacant after the election of three members to the Legislative Assembly on December 23. |
