Omar's Govt gifted new vehicles to ministers every year | The VIP culture that ruined JK | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 11: Jammu Kashmir has the distinction of gifting new vehicles to ministers every year. The records available with the Early Times reveal that crores out of the tax payers money has been spent during the Omar Abdullah led coalition rule over luxurious cars of Ministers and their family members. In six years of Omar Abdullah's rule, 166 luxurious and undoubtedly expensive cars were purchased by the state government for its ministers. Despite the state already having a sizeable number of vehicles in the state mortar garage department, the ministers preferred new over the old ones- caring little about the hardships being faced by the people. From VIP Fleet to Hyundai Sonata and Ford to Swift Dzire, there are also Innova, Scorpio, Safari, Tavera, SX4, Bolero besides other luxurious vehicles that the ministers purchased out of the state exchequer. A total expenditure without the fuel over the new vehicles is shown by the concerned department as Rs 2, 78000 per month. There were 28 brand new cars purchased till March 2009. The NC- Congress regime took over the office in January 2009. Among 28 new cars, there were 24 expensive ambassador cars which were given to the ministers of Omar Abdullah. Omar didn't stop on that note only. His government again purchased 16 brand new luxurious cars among which there were 11 ambassador cars and Tata Safaris. All the 16 expensive vehicles were given to the ministers. The chief minister also brought one new Maruti Gypsy for himself while getting bored from the older model. As the state was treading towards financial crunch, Omar government in 2011 again ordered purchase of 51 expensive cars including Swift Dzires, Tata Safaris and ambassador cars. The government replaced the earlier purchased cars with the new ones. Same year, 19 Tata Safaris were given to the ministers. The other VIPs didn't disappoint themselves as well. They brought Eight Maruti SX4 and used them thoroughly. In 2012, 34 cars were purchased. This time the beneficiaries were the Deputy Speaker and Chairmen of various boards. The Omar government ordered purchase of 35 expensive cars in 2013. Once again the new cars were given to ministers and older ones were replaced. Last year, the speaker of Legislative Assembly was given a brand new Tata Safari. The time has come when the governments will have to be made accountable for all the blunders they have committed to the state, said a concerned citizen. |
