Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 11: Parties likely to nominate defeated candidates Prominent figures in all four major political parties in the state who contested assembly and Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully are now running from pillar to post to secure a seat in the Legislative Council.
The activity gained momentum yesterday after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for holding elections to 11 seats of the legislative council that had fallen vacant, or will be vacant soon.
The race for securing a seat in the Legislative Council (LC) has intensified, especially among losers in the recently-held Assembly elections. While some defeated candidates are approaching the party leaderships directly, many others have approached influential persons in their respective parties for lobbying for the upper house. PDP-BJP will contest the upcoming elections to the 11 seats of the Upper House in alliance. National Conference has reportedly got assurance from the Congress party for support for its candidates. This comes as a reward to the election of Congress stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad to the Rajya Sabha with NC's support.
Sources said the NC working president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah has made up his mind about the prospective candidates for the LC seats. Sources said that by fielding Sajad Ahmad Kichloo and Nasir Aslam Wani in the Rajya Sabha elections, Omar sent out the message that both Nasir and Sajad would be repeated in the LC elections.
As far as numbers go, the opposition will be able to win only two seats out of 11, even if they put a united face in the elections.
However, in PDP camp, the situation is of 'Ek Anaar Sav Bemaar'. There are many aspirants, but the PDP can get a maximum of six seats. Those who are in race include Rafi Ahmad Mir (Ex MLA), Peerzada Mansur Husain (Ex MLA), Mohammad Sartaj Madni (Ex MLA), Zafar Iqbal Manhas, Mehboob Iqbal, Surinder Singh, Peer Mohammad Husain, Sardar Rafiq Husain Khan, Khursheed Aalam, Yasir Reshi and Bashir Ahmad Mir.
BJP too has many aspirants including two from Kashmir valley and two from Leh. However, there are indications that the party will field, among others, senior lawyer Sunil Sethi for one of the seats.
Out of the eleven LC seats that are available, eight vacancies arose due to retirement of sitting members. Three other seats fell vacant after the MLCs were elected to the state assembly in the recently-concluded assembly elections.
The polls will be held on March 2, for which the notification will be issued on February 12.February 18 will be the last date of filing nominations. The scrutiny of papers will be held the next day.
Candidates can withdraw from the electoral battle by February 21. The counting will be held on March 2.
