Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 24: The State Tourism Department, which is already facing huge loss due to its own "faulty policies" since long ago, is leaving no stone unturned to cause this sector more damage by not implementing Jammu and Kashmir Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1978 to fix rates of service charges. Sources told Early Times that as per provision of the Act, the persons dealing with tourism and for matters connected therewith are to be registered under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1978 but due to the lackadaisical approach of Tourism Department, the Act has not been implemented in toto. They said that Tourism Department had to fix rates and services charges in respect of hotels, travel agents, dealers associated with travel trade to be charged from the persons availing such facilities but Department has not fixed the rates and service charges to be charged by hotel owners and travel agents. "This nonchalant approach of Tourism Department has given a free hand to the hoteliers and other service providers to charge s per their will and fleece tourists and other people who avail these facilities which is causing huge damage state exchequer," they said. Sources disclosed that the "apathetic attitude" of the department can be gauged from the fact that the process for fixation of rates is under process and is yet to implemented. They said the fixation of rates for services charges is fixed by the Department after taking into account the quality of service provided by hoteliers, travel agents and others. As per Act Government shall, by notification in the Government Gazette, fix the rates and service charges in respect of hotels which may be charged by the hotel-keeper for boarding or lodging or both from persons staying therein or from other customers. It has been mentioned in the act that such rate and service charges shall be fixed on the recommendations of a committee, the composition whereof shall be such, as may be prescribed. While recommending the rate and service charges, such committee shall take into account the standard of the hotel, the accommodation and services provided by it and the quality of food served by it to the customers, the act states. |
