'Amit Shah's intervention prevented cross voting' | BJP roped in 3 NC legislators ahead of RS polls? | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 24: Recently held Rajya Sabha elections could have led to the ousted National Conference splitting into two but BJP high command passing strict instructions to the state BJP unit to refrain from horse trading acted as a stumbling for BJP to ostensibly strike a deal with NC leaders. Sources told Early Times three NC legislators one from Srinagar and two from south Kashmir were in touch with the BJP leaders ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls and had almost finalized a deal with them to ensure victory of the BJP candidate, Chander Mohan Sharma, who lost the RS polls by a slender margin of two votes to the veteran Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad. Sources said that BJP leaders in JK had roped in three NC leaders who were ready to vote for Sharma but the intervention of the BJP top brass at the last moment led to the deal not going through. The insiders said that news about three NC leaders being in touch with the BJP's state unit somehow reached to Azad just two to three days before the RS polls were slated to be held. He (Azad) issued a hard hitting statement and accused BJP of "misusing" the official machinery and resorting to horse trading. "Azad's statement created ripples in the BJP camp following which the party president Amit Shah asked all his men not to indulge in any misadventure as it would dent the clean image of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi," they added. Azad, sources said, informed the NC working president Omar Abdullah about his three legislators being in touch with the BJP men but Omar, they said, feigned ignorance about the matter and assured him that if any of the NC legislators indulges in cross voting he would be thrown out of the party. Sources said the BJP backtracking from the deal shattered the dreams of the NC legislators to get something in return for their votes. "These legislators had even convinced a few others to join them but their plans could not materialize," they added. Sources said top NC leaders tried to ascertain who where the legislators, who had offered an olive branch to BJP and were out to ensure the defeat of NC-Cong joint candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad. "However, none of the NC legislators confessed that they were in touch with the BJP men," they added. Sources claimed that NC legislators having allegedly conspired to go against the party whip has become a cause of concern for the NC leaders. "NC has been out of power for just few months and cracks have already started appearing. NC leaders are looking for ways and means to keep their flock together for the next six years," they added. Sources claimed that top NC leaders are maintaining a close vigil over their legislators ahead of the MLC polls which are slated to be held in March this year as they are eyeing at least two MLC seats. "If only two to three MLAs defy the party whip it can prove embarrassing for NC and its working president Omar Abdullah," they added. |
