With Mufti all set to become CM people demand proper establishment of SAC | Anti-graft body fails to take action against 'corrupt' | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Feb 24: Establishment of the anti-graft body State Accountability Commission (SAC) in the state has failed to meet the desired objectives as no substantial action has been done against the people involved in various scams in the state. Ever since its establishment this anti-graft body has been found wanting with respect to taking action against politicians, bureaucrats, government officials and other influential people involved in various scams and scandals across the state. The SAC has turned out to be yet another body which has been formed to 'rehabilitate' some of the people after their retirement from the government service. During all these years no action whatsoever has been taken against the 'corrupt' people. This has given an impression that the proverb many a slip between cup and the lip holds true with the overall functioning of the SAC. People in general are quite upset with the overall functioning of SAC saying that there is no relief in sight for them. "Over the years recommendatory bodies have failed to deliver on the ground with people continuing to suffer. If action was taken against any corrupt politician, bureaucrat or government official then I would have said that the establishment of SAC is in tune with demands of the common masses, but that is not to be," said Altaf Ahmad, a resident of Rajbagh. People in general believe that all the 'big fish' manage their escape during probe by the different investigating agencies. The people say that SAC has over the years failed to fix the responsibility of the people involved in various scams and scandals. Going by the tardy pace of work one can safely say that it will take ages for the Commission to take action against any corrupt official. "What happened to the probe carried out in the scam involving electrification of Panchayat Ghars across the state? This scam rocked the state around 10 years back but till date nothing substantial has come out of the probe. If the Commission can't solve the case for 10 years how come it will be able to deliver justice on daily basis," said Shahid Ahmad, a lawyer. The SAC came into existence when Mufti Mohammad Sayeed became the chief minister of the state in 2002. Over the years more so during the tenure of Omar Abdullah led coalition government, the SAC was virtually made non-functional. The Commission has become a tool in the hands of the government with the people at helm using it for their means. "As nobody has been booked for the wrong doings so far it can be safely said that SAC is a toothless tiger just like State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). It is better to close offices of all the Commissions so that people don't attach any expectation from them with regard to the justice from the system," said Mohammad Irfan, a student. People have expectations that Mufti might revive the Commission since he is all set to start his second innings as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. They demand that action should be taken against corrupt so that masses have belief in the system of justice. |
