Sheikh Nazir was not a rabble rouser but theoretician who framed strategies for NC | Obituary | | M.L.Kak
New, Delhi, Feb 24: Though he had Master's degree in English literature Sheikh Nazir Ahmed, cousin of Dr Farooq Abdullah and General Secretary of National Conference for a couple of decades was reticent by nature. He was a man of few words. Those who knew him well treated him more as a theoretician than a rabble-rouser. As general secretary and a close relation of Sheikh Abdullah Sheikh Nazir Ahmed would give long lessons to senior party leaders and activists on how they should run the party show. For a number of years he would use, like a school teacher,a blackboard and a chalk for putting down his thoughts on the blackboard for the party activists and leaders. And consequently in his demise the National Conference has lost a valuable leader who used to lay down guidelines for the party. Being a close relation of the Sheikh dynasty he had no problem in securing obedience from party leaders and activists who would listen to his advice and suggestions. Veteran National Conference leader and former General Secretary of the party Sheikh Nazir Ahmad died Tuesday morning after a brief hospitalisation at a Jammu hospital.Dr Farooq Abdullah's cousin, Nazir was admitted in a critical condition to Super Speciality Hospital after suffering from multi-organ failure. While paying homage, Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted on the micro-blogging site Twitter, " My uncle & NC stalwart Sheikh Nazir Ahmed passed away in the early hours of this morning in Jammu after a brief hospitalisation."Omar added that the deceased NC leader will be buried in his ancestral grave yard in Srinagar later today as per his wishes. He was reluctant to give interview to media people because he did not want to give vent to his feelings which could have brought him in conflict with New Delhi. And whenever he opened his mouth he did cause a flutter in political circles Once he did so in December 2012. Breaking his long silence, the ailing General Secretary of ruling National Conference, Advocate Sheikh Nazir Ahmed accused New Delhi of following the policy of might-is-right in Kashmir, adding Kashmiris continue to suffer for no fault of theirs."Even after suffering for more than six decades, we still don't know what our fault is? They (New Delhi) should tell us why we have been left to suffer. Government of India is following might-is-right policy on Kashmir," Nazir, Ahmed had told a media House in an interview. Eyewitness to every political development of Kashmir in contemporary times, Nazir has not travelled to any country as he never applied for passport. He believes in the special status of J&K by virtue of Article 370. To a query how he sees the 1975-Accord as Congress believes the pact "settled everything on Kashmir," the septuagenarian NC General Secretary said the accord is documented and every Kashmiri should read it. "Sheikh Sahib was not directly involved in the 1975 exercise. It was Mirza Muhammad Afzal Beg and G Parthasarthy who were talking to each other. Sheikh Sahib was always concerned over what had happened with him in 1953. We had not lost much till 1953 but after his arrest erosion of autonomy started. Whether in his residence or in office or in any party meeting Sheikh Nazir Ahmed would remain a well dressed leader. He was a politician with clean habits. He was a polished politician and this I have experienced whenever I had an occasion to meet him at his residence. Unlike other party leader he would be sophisticated whenever I confronted him with some questions for preparing a news story for the newspaper for which I would work for. There weas one thing peculiar about him.He would not open up easily. He would try to avoid speaking on contentious issues. He was keen to know about the impact of the party's programme on people of Jammu and Kashmir because he wanted the special status, that the state enjoyed under Article 370 of the const itution of India, to remain intact. He was also a supporter of restoration of autonomy to J&K. May his soul rest in peace. |
