Crisis of adolescence, but core intact amid flux | | Ashutosh | 3/19/2015 9:25:44 PM |
| Few would like to call it mid-life-crisis, considering the age of the leadership but I prefer to pronounce the present episode in AAP, as the crisis of Adolescence. This is the age when kid is neither child nor he/she has attained adulthood. He/she confronts two personalities in himself/herself and gets confused what he or she is, if he/she is a child or an adult. This is a transition phase through which every individual has to go through. AAP is also in the same phase. It is child of a movement and graduated into a political party but the transition is still not complete. It is caught in between. And so the problem. There is lot of debate. Few call it the clash of personalities, few clash of ideas including the writer. Few others call it clash of ambitions. And for other few this is crude politics and AAP is no different. It is behaving like other political parties. It's "newness" is over and at the crossroad is the "Idea of AAP". Let me tell you at the outset, there is no danger to Idea of AAP. AAP stands for clean politics, affordable politics, corruption free politics and citizen friendly politics. It has imbibed the concept of transparency and participatory democracy. There is no threat to these concepts. In fact, the Delhi government has already laid the foundation of model of alternate politics and governance. But yes, if I say that there is no problem then I will be lying. There are issues and that need to be dealt with internally. But this is natural and in my view it is the problem of growing up. Party is born of a movement. A large chunk of leadership and volunteers are still in the agitation mode. There is nothing wrong in it. Movement demands different sensibilities and different reflexes whereas politics has different requirements. Movement is idealism. Politics is realism. It's practical. Politics in present form is devoid of morality and high values. AAP is committed to bring back the moral fibre in the body politics of the country. AAP wants politics to come back to basic, which has moral moorings. It will not happen overnight. Till then AAP has to make minor adjustments in its tactics but without compromising the ideological core and long-term strategy. Since few of us are still in the agitation mode, this minor adjustment for them becomes huge and is perceived by them as major compromise which is not true. This creates friction and a crisis too. In my opinion AAP is not exception. Every party has gone through these transition phases. Every leader has to cross this bridge sooner or later. What is new is that AAP is still in nascent stage and others have experienced many a time in its journey. I distinctly remember when Mrs Gandhi took over Congress party, the party had to make a transition. There was a clash between the two generations.Nehruvian era was ending but old generation was unwilling to accept the changing realities. Nehru era was defined by idealism and dreamy ideas. China had woken up the eyes of entire nation that the country needed a realist who can talk in terms of power. Old generation was still imprisoned in past. Syndicate was not willing to abdicate its space. Mrs Gandhi was a practical politician. She was realist to the core. The friction was inevitable due to the fact that the transformation from old to new was not complete. Her call for conscience vote in presidential elections was a reflection of that conflict. Which was followed by bank nationalisation and end of privy purse. Bangladesh crisis completed the process of transition. Country has changed. Lofty ideals were replaced by raw power. Another example is recent one. It is BJP.Narendra Modi's accession to prime ministership was not smooth. L K Advani had made BJP a national party. There was a time when BJP faced serious challenges to its existence. Once it was reduced to 2 seats. But it was the charisma of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and strategy of Advani which created an all-India acceptability for BJP. It is because of these two that BJP formed its first government at the centre in 1996, followed by in 1998, 1999.India had changed in last ten years and it needs a different kind of leadership. Advani did not fit into the new scheme of things. Narendra Modi was ready but again the process of transition was to happen. Advani opposed Modi. He wrote a letter saying BJP had moved away from its original ideals and now pursuing the interest of one individual. It was in vain. New generation went along with Modi.It will be wrong to presume who is right and who is wrong. One idea which is relevant in one era loses its sheen in a different age. Both are right in their respective time and space. Since society is dynamic and change is constant, so the idea to remain relevant has to adjust to new realities. But nobody is suggesting that with the changing times core value will also change. The person remains the same. Identity also remains the same. Just the response and reflexes change. Similarly, AAP is the same. It's only changing into a political party and with new changes, the response and the reflex of the party called AAP will also change but that does not mean AAP will compromise with its core values. I hope everyone will understand sooner than later and crisis will be over. The author is spokesperson, Aam Aadmi Party. ( [email protected]) |
