Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 19: Lack of basic facilities such as electricity, toilet, speak volumes of the indifference shown by successive Governments, which have failed to utilize funds to improve the lot of rural students.
According to the recent report of Union Human Resource Development Ministry, nearly 70 percent schools in state are still without electricity connections, which means, the students in these schools are still deprived of computer education. "Out of total 28, 765 schools 20,409 are still without power", the report disclosed.
The report further revealed nearly 60 percent schools were without playgrounds. A total of 17,167 schools out of total 28,765 are without playground facility, the report revealed. The absence of playground facility, diminishes the possibilities of government school students to become players.
"Where the sports items are being used in government schools if there are no playgrounds in these schools, it is a million dollar question. In recent past, Union government had launched Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyaan, envisaging nearly 6500 sports complexes in rural blocks, but same had failed to emphasize over establishing playground in government schools to foster hidden talent", a school teacher said.
The report further revealed that 9680 schools out of total 28765 in Jammu and Kashmir are without toilets. Surprisingly, this new figure is in contradiction to the figures revealed by government in recent past. "In December Union HRD Ministry had revealed that a total of 15309 schools out of total 28765 were without toilet facilities. These schools included 8685 schools in which there was no toilet facility for male students while 6624 schools had no facility for girls but only after three months the figure has shown sharp decline, which is surprising", an official said.
The report further revealed that a total of 2805 schools had no Drinking water facility, which simply means that students have to fetch water for usage in schools.
