Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 19: Agitated over 'offensive' remarks of National Conference's (NC) MLA Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi viz a viz the saffron party, some Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) legislators and a Minister while objecting to the statements emanating from the opposition benches today created uproar in the State Legislative Assembly. The furor began first NC MLA Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi while participating in the discussion on Governor's address to both the Houses of State Legislature lashed out at Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) for stitching an alliance with the BJP to form a government in the state which he asserted is not in the welfare of the state. Mehdi further said that though NC and Congress offered unconditional support to the PDP to keep BJP at bay in bid to stop the saffron party to extend its communal agenda but the people of the state especially of Kashmir will not forgive PDP for its decision to choose BJP as a partner in the government formation. While delivering his speech, the NC legislator in a flow of words took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for their alleged role in inciting Gujarat riots and in the demolition of Babri Masjid. NC MLA Mehdi's remarks against PM Modi and the BJP leadership prompted strong objections from few of the BJP MLAs and Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Pawan Gupta, who up on their feet interrupted his statement and shouted at him. "The member should take his words back as remarks made by him are totally unacceptable to us. We disapprove it…We will not accept such remarks at any cost," BJP MLA Ravinder Raina said.In the meantime, MoS Pawan Gupta also stood at his seat and yelled at Mehdi for his statement wherein he demeaned PM Modi and the saffron party. However, Speaker State Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta soon intervened and tried to pacify the agitated BJP MLAs The Speaker asked the BJP MLAs to let the NC legislator complete his speech and make counterpoints, if any, when their turn to speak comes. Meanwhile, the Congress MLA G M Saroori rose up and urged the Chair to direct Pawan Gupta, who was objecting to Mehdi's statement, not to lodge protest as being a Minister he is not supposed to do so adding that only a Member can raise objections that too with the permission of the Speaker. "I request the Speaker to ask the BJP Minister to follow the procedures of the House as it is not permissible that a Minister protests in the House," Saroori said. The BJP members, however, kept on creating uproar in the House following which the Speaker Kavinder Gupta asked Mehdi to take his seat. Later, speaking to media persons outside the Legislative Assembly Complex, the BJP MLA Ravinder Raina said, "One cannot use such derogatory words against the Prime Minister.'' "BJP members met the Speaker in his chamber and requested him to expunge those remarks and it has been done,'' he added. Meanwhile, later in the afternoon during the second sitting of the Lower House, the Congress MLA Vikar Rasool almost in a similar tone and tenor like Mehdi launched an open attack on Modi and the BJP, however, the MLAs belonging to the saffron party did not raise any objections and remained silent. |
