APSCC welcomes State Govt's decision to hold GPC elections | | | Early Times report
Srinagar, Mar 19: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) welcomed the state government's decision to hold the Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee (GPC) elections in the state in July this year. The Committee has said that elections were more than due and the step taken by the government is appreciable one. In a statement, APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina said that the step of holding elections for the GPC is the first step in redressing the grievances of the Sikh community in the state. He said the problems being faced by the members of the community are there due to the care free approach of the previous state government. "We suggest that the government should complete the requisite formalities well in time so that the elections are held in July. These elections are overdue by many years and the non-holding of elections has made Gurudwara Endowment Act totally defunct. The previous government was never serious to work for the community issues and we suffered like anything," he said. The APSCC Chairman said that GPC elections were due in 2013 adding that overstay of district committees created chaos in the management of Gurudwaras since huge property is attached to these Gurudwaras. He said the delay in GPC elections has led to appointment of adhoc committees and community members fear that some mismanagement of its historical valuables and Gurudwara property might have taken place. "PDP had already promised to redress the issues faced by the Sikh community in their election manifesto. These include granting minority status to Sikhs and extending National Commission for Minorities Act to the community in Jammu & Kashmir. This Act is applicable to all states of India to safeguard and uplift minorities in the states of India, but not in the state," said Raina. The APSCC Chairman said that previous government delayed the implementation of this Act in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that despite instructions from former Chairman of Minority Commission, Wajahat Habibullah no initiative was taken by the previous National Conference-Congress coalition government to implement the National Minority Act in the state. He, while referring to the killing of 36 Sikhs by unknown gunmen at Chattisinghpora in Anantnag district on March 20, 2000 said that was a dark day in the history of the state. He said these innocent killings that took place on the eve of visit of US President Bill Clinton were never probed despite several appeals for the past 15 years. He added that justice is yet to be done in this case. |
