HC directs DC Srinagar to remove poplar trees in one month | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 19 : The state High Court today directed Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to remove existing poplar trees in the summer capital within a month. Hearing a petition, a single bench of the court comprising Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey also directed the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to ensure ban on sale, purchase and plantation of Russian poplar trees within district Srinagar. The court passed the directions hearing a petition filed by one M A Mir of Zakura in outskirts of Srinagar, seeking directions from the court to direct his neighbor to remove the poplars. The cotton-type pollen produced by Russian poplars remains a major health concern during springs in Kashmir. The pollen causes rhinitis and throat infection. Doctors says prevention, rather than medicines, is the best cure for the allergy. They advise preventing unnecessary exposure to the substance and use of masks to minimize the effects of pollen. Last year, the DC Srinagar imposed a blanket ban on plantation of Russian poplar trees keeping in view the large scale complaints of allergy being caused by its pollen. The then District Magistrate Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah imposed the ban, saying that pollen falling from these trees had become a major source of allergies in the city and had reached alarming proportions. "Strict action under rules will be taken against those violating the directive. I have directed the police, Revenue and Social Forestry officials to enforce the ban immediately," he had added. The district magistrate had also said he has also sought a report from experts to be submitted within 15 days on devising a mechanism for uprooting of existing Russian poplars to prevent the pollen allergy from spreading. |
