National Seminar on Micro-irrigation in Floriculture begins at SKUAST-Jammu | | | Early Times Report jammu, Mar 19: Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) in collaboration with the Department of Floriculture, Jammu, organized two days national seminar on "Technology and Management of Micro-irrigation in Floriculture" here today at its Main Campus, Chatha, Jammu. Dr Nirmal Kumar Singh, Deputy Chief Minister of J&K State was the Chief Guest where as Dr Pradeep K Sharma Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J presided over the function organized in collaboration with a Division of Agricultural Engineering, SKUAST-Jammu. At the onset Dr K S Risam, Director Extension welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries, officers of University and the line departments, delegates, farmers and students. He emphasized that this National Seminar will be very helpful to the farmers of Kandi areas of Jammu region. The programme started with lightening of lamp followed by recitation of Saraswati Vandhana. Chief guest Dr Nirmal Kumar Singh, Deputy Chief Minister in his address said to combat the water scarcity in our country is one of the greatest challenges which has its impact on the livelihood of the farming community. "The time has come to take stock of the research inputs and vision of various stake holders for identification of the knowledge gaps in formulation of the strategies for meeting the irrigation water requirements of farmers through optimum use of modern technologies, he added. Prof P.K.Sharma, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J in his address stressed that water which is becoming an increasingly scarce resource needs to be conserved and utilized efficiently. He also impressed upon the farmers to go for commercial floriculture utilizing all the latest know how for harnessing maximum output per unit area. Speaking on occasion K K Sharma, Director Floriculture presented before the house the scenario of floriculture in Jammu region. Dr Sushil Sharma Convener of the National Seminar highlighted the importance of micro-irrigation vis-a-vis flower cultivation. On this occasion various publications of the university viz. Abstract book, Package of practices of Flower crops, Fruit crops, Vegetable crops, Rabi/Kharif crops, Success stories of farmer entrepreneurship through KVK's were released by the Chief Guest. The progressive farmers of Jammu region were presented with certificate of honours and a mementos. At the end the vote of thanks was presented by Dr.Sushmita M. Dadhich, the organizing secretary of the National Seminar. |
