Jammu, Mar 24: Government today revealed that erstwhile NC-Congress regime had upgraded 800 schools without the approval and concurrence of the Finance and Planning Departments. The Education Minister, Naeem Akhtar told the Assembly that schools were upgraded without surveying, technical inputs. "To upgrade 800 schools across the state and creation of staff there is a financial implication of Rs. 243.75 Crore per annum," he added. "There are 5000 schools in Jammu and Kashmir where on an average the total strength of the students is just 1-15 students. There are other schools where against total three students, the availability of the teachers is 5 while in other cases there are 5 students and 4 teachers", Akhter said. He said government is contemplating to shift students from one school to other having low strength of students. The minister was replying to a question of MLA Reasi Ajay Nanda that no new High and Higher Secondary School has been opened under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and state plan in the Reasi district for the past five years. "Under SSA, 35 Primary Schools have been approved by MHRD, GoI during the current financial year 2014-15 in Jammu division. Nearly 224 Middle and 153 High Schools were upgraded to the next higher levels under State Plan. At present, there are 95 Government Degree Colleges functional in the state out of which 22 degree colleges were sanctioned during 2011", the Minister said. The minister said that at present, there is no proposal to upgrade schools to the level of Higher Secondary schools. |
