Not 124 but 250 schools have zero student population? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 24:As Government disclosed on the floor of the house that 124 schools in state have zero population of students , reliable sources in education department reveal that such schools are more than double the figure given by government. According to experts in education sector the main reason for this is unnecessary up gradation of primary schools into Middle schools and creation of new primary schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) from the last five years across state. National Conference MLC Dr Shehnaz Ganai had sought the details about such schools from Government and Education Minister Naeem Akhtar had revealed on Monday in Legislative Council that as many as 124 schools across state are defunct as they have zero population of students. Details reveal that from 2008 onwards hundreds of primary schools were created in various education zones across state and in addition to it same number of primary schools were upgraded under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) which is centrally sponsored scheme , but most of these new creations and up gradations were done under political influence of local MLA's and politicians. In addition many Chief Education Officers (CEO's) and Zonal Educational Officers (ZEO's) were involved in this dirty game as they got illegal gratification from the blue-eyed candidates who were appointed as ReT's in these schools which were not at all entitled for new creation or up-gradation. Pertinently as many as 4994 schools in the State have student population which varies between 1 to 35 students. In 3611 schools of Jammu division, population of students varies from one to 20 while as in Kashmir 1383 schools have student population varying from one to 50," the minister informed the House. Due to absence of proper education policy and mismanagement of education sector the school as well as higher education continue to suffer. A report submitted by Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) pointed out that uneven teacher-student ratio, improper buildings with inadequate facilities in the classroom, rented accommodation to run the schools were among the main problems in the state education sector. |
