NC President becomes overnight friend of separatists in Kashmir | Once a votary of bombing Pakistan, Dr Abdullah talks of dialogue | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, May 13: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has of late developed love for the separatist leadership of Kashmir and has urged the central government to engage in a dialogue with them to find a solution to the Kashmir 'issue'. Dr. Abdullah who and whose party National Conference is no more in power these days has asked the central government to shun its 'rigidity' vis-à-vis the Kashmir issue. The NC President has said that dialogue and dialogue alone can solve the problem and for this New Delhi should come forward and invite separatists in this regard. There is an old saying that politicians change colours like chameleons. The phrase may not hold true for every politician, but it fits the bill when it comes to Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The NC President is dubbed as maverick not only by his enemies, but his friends as well. He changes his statements in the same way as seasons change during a year. In November 2003 when then Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre announced a ceasefire with militants in Jammu & Kashmir, the NC President lost his cool and took a jibe at the people at helm in New Delhi. Dr. Abdullah asked the Prime Minister of that time Atal Bihari Vajpayee to order for the bombing of Pakistan alleging that the neighbouring country was meddling in the internal affairs of India. The NC President has on record said that there is no space for the political prisoners in the jails of the state and it would be in tune if these people are killed by the police and security forces. He used to spew venom against Pakistan inside Parliament and outside as well whenever any militant attack was carried out in the state or in the country as well. It seems that the NC President is feeling frustrated after his party's worst ever performance in the assembly elections held so far in the state. NC could manage only 15 seats in the 2014 assembly elections, lowest ever so far in the history of state. It seems that Dr. Abdullah wants to play to the galleries by raising the issue of importance of dialogue with separatists in Kashmir. Pertinently, the NC President knows that the card of separatism goes well with the people of Kashmir and he can easily befool the people on this issue. However, in his heart of hearts he knows that he may not be successful after his party's debacle in the last assembly elections. Dr. Abdullah fully knows that people have understood that they cannot be fooled by politicians on the issue of separatism in Kashmir. The NC President wants to play the role of a peace monger despite the fact that he and his party face serious accusation of killing of 120 persons mostly youth in the street protests in Kashmir during the summer of 2010. Although, Omar Abdullah was the chief minister at that time, the NC President never uttered a word against the killing of innocent youth. |
