“Decision has left many BJP leaders red faced. When they were in opposition they used to corner the then Prime Minister
Dr Manmohan Singh for India playing cricket with Pakistan and they
used to call him the weakest Prime Minister in country's history.”
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which vehemently opposed India-Pakistan cricketing ties and virtually forced IPL team owners not to select Pakistani players has taken a U-turn as the Prime Minister and the senior most BJP leader Narendra Modi has given his nod for resuming India-Pakistan cricket diplomacy.
Indian team would play cricket with Pakistan in United Arab Emirates in an attempt to improve political relations between the countries. "We have taken the decision to start a cricket series between both countries to improve our relations," a BJP MP quoted Prime Minister Modi as having said during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary party meeting.
Soon after a resolution was adopted appreciating initiatives taken by the Modi government during its first year in office, Modi said, "Some of the members have expressed concern against the series and that is why he was clearing the air."
Just one a year ago when BJP was not in power it opposed the Indo-Pak cricketing ties tooth and nail. It (BJP) ensured that erstwhile regime led by Congress buckles under pressure so that India doesn't play cricket with Pakistan.
The decision of the Prime Minister to resume cricketing ties with Pakistan has left many BJP leaders red faced as when they were in opposition they used to leave no opportunity to corner the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for India playing cricket with Pakistan and they used to call him the "weakest Prime Minister in India's history."
Sources told Early Times that BJP MPs are not happy with Prime Minister giving his nod to the proposed cricket series as most of them believe that cricket and terrorism cannot go together. "We cannot follow the footsteps of the ousted Congress led UPA regime. Our foreign policy has to be different than Manmohan Singh regime. History stands testimony to the fact that we have played cricket with Pakistan on many occasions but despite that it has never changed its ways and has left no stone unturned to target India," said a senior BJP leader.
Another BJP leader said that soft policy towards Pakistan would encourage the neighboring country to talk about Kashmir and give confidence to separatists in Kashmir that "all is not lost."
"We have to stick to our basic agenda rather than getting carried away. Soon after PM Modi took over the reins of the country he sent a clear message to Pakistan that it should not meddle into the internal matters of India and if it (Pakistan) indulges in any sort of misadventure it would get a befitting reply," the BJP leader said.
He said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi should realize that first Pakistan should be made to understand that it cannot allow its soil to be used for promoting violence against India and it should stop giving shelter to most wanted men in India."
The BJP leader said, "India's most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim is in Pakistan and is enjoying all the privileges. On the other hand JuD chief Hafiz Sayeed wants Pakistan youth to wage war against India. Pakistan just a few days before even set the Mumbai attack mastermind Lakhvi free. Despite all these glaring facts India wants to play cricket with Pakistan. It's ridiculous."
The leader said, "Prime Minister should make it clear that who is he trying to appease and has Pakistan mend its ways since the day Modi took over the reins of the country?"
