Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 13: Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse daily wager, contractuals and need based workers of different government department who are demanding regularisation of their services.
Several thousand employees of Public Health Engineering (PHE), Power Development Department (PDD) Agriculture, horticulture and other departments assembled at S K Park near here. Raising slogans in favour of their demands, the employees alleged that the coalition government led by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had failed to come to their rescue as promised by the party before the Assembly elections. This was the second time in less than a week employees hit the streets in the summer capital, Srinagar demanding regularisation of their service. They alleged that despite completing seven to 10 years in service, their employment was not regularised which was against the government policy that any contractual, need based worker and daily wager completing service in service would be regularized. Later ,when the employees were heading towards main Residency road, security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse them. Traffic on the busy road was also disrupted for some time. There are about 60000 employees waiting for their regularization in the state. However, their services could not be regularized by the previous coalition government of National Conference (NC) and Congress after some differences between two ministers about the actual number of employees.
The PDP-BJP government has now decided to appoint a team to go through the records of these employees how and who had appointed them.
