Geelani being haunted by invisible ghost | | | Not withstanding the fact that the Government of India and the state Government, led by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, have announced on various occasions that Kashmiri Pandits,on their return to Kashmir, were not going to be settled in one composite colony or clusters, separatists continue to voice their anger against such a plan..The central and the state Governments have stated that these Pandits would be settled in transit camps in more then three places in the valley. And those who were willing to seek rehabilitation in their native villages, which they had left during the time of their migration to the plains, were going to be helped in many ways even if they had sold their land and houses years ago. However, despite these assurances hardliners among the separatists have announced that they will not allow the Government to settle these Pandits in a separate township as that would amount to dividing people in the Kashmir valley in the name of religion. It is a case of being haunted by an invisible ghostThe Chief of the Hurriyat Conference (G),Syed Ali Shah Geelani has made it clear that his organization,an amalgam of several separatist outfits, will not allow the state and the central Governments to fulfill their agenda of rehabilitating displaced people from Kashmir in a separate township in the valley. Geelani has claimed that the the Indian policy makers want to implement Israel-type plan which has been tried in Palestine and he and his colleagues in the Hurriyat Conference will not allow it to happen .In support of his contention he has alleged that the recent tour of south Kashmir by Chief Minister,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, was part of the plan of identifying and acquiring a chunk of land for establishing a separate township for the displaced people. The separatist leader described the so called plan a divisive in nature because it has the potential of dividing the people of Jammu and Kashmir on religious lines and to create Palestine-like situation in Kashmir on the pretext of rehabilitation of migrant Pandits. The people of Kashmir, including the Hindus, will resist this ploy with full might and will not allow it to succeed ,is the sermon from Geelani. What is amazing is the way these separatists have started blaming Mufti Sayeed for cooperating with the central Government in fulfilling the latter's designs of rehabilitating Pandits in a composite but separate township when the Chief Minister has already conveyed to the Government of India his opposition on the plan on setting up a separate township for the Pandits. The Mufti has conveyed to the Government of India the need for rehabilitating Pandits within the localities inhabited by Muslims which could generate confidence among the minority community so that the age-old spirit of Kashmiriyat was enlivened. If Syed Ali Shah Geelani has supported the return of Pandits he should have formed a committee for interacting with prominent leaders of Pandits in Jammu and Delhi for removing misgivings,if there are any. Yes,there is no unanimity among the Kashmiri Pandits on the mode of return and rehabilitation. While a section of displaced people wish to get rehabilitated in the villages they had fled from in 1990,others want a separate township for Pandits to lead a dignified and secured life, and yet others are in favour of a separate homeland, with union territory status, within the valley. Not only the separatists and the successive state Governments but the Government of India too are opposed to the establishment of a separate homeland for the displaced people.Besides this Geelani should have met Pandits in Jammu and Delhi in bid to promote confidence among them on the return and rehabilitation plan.Such interaction could have helped Geelani to know that not all displaced people are willing to return to Kashmir. It is a small section of Pandits who are keen to return and get rehabilitated in Kashmir.By opposing composite township or separate clusters Geelani was trying to sow seeds of mistrust among the Pandits.Let him meet Pandits and remove fears.Let him lead the first Jatha of Pandits wishing to return to Kashmir. It will set the trend for others. |
