What message does NC want to convey? | Passing resolutions at SM Abdullah's grave | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 13: The National Conference passed five resolutions on Saturday seeking revocation of armed forces special powers act (AFSPA) and resumption of Indo-Pak ties. The NC also sought rehabilitation of the flood victims besides shedding tears on other mundane issues. Normally the NC takes vital decisions either in the `kitchen cabinet' (in the Sheikh family) of in the party headquarters at Nawa-e-Subh complex. But this time, the NC leaders assembled at the grave of NC ideologue and founder, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. All the prominent leaders including Ali Muhammad Sagar, Sheikh Mustafa Kamal and Mian Altaf delivered fiery speeches accusing Mufti of sell out and compromising the dignity of the state. While the public by and large ignored the resolutions, the place where the resolutions were passed attracted attention. Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, for the information of the NC leaders and members has become almost irrelevant at least in Kashmir Valley. The NC leaders who spoke at the mausoleum are fully aware of this harsh reality. Why did they, therefore, choose the place for such an important meeting? In 1983 when the state went to elections, Dr Farooq Abdullah took all the prospective candidates (MLAs) to Sheikh Abdullah's grave where they pledged to stay faithful to the party and the Sheikh family. However, a year later, some of them supported G M Shah who assumed office of the Chief Minister. Dr Farooq was `dethroned'. The pledge taken at the grave of NC founder had not made any difference. The place (where NC founder rests) has to be guarded round the clock for a host of reasons. What message was conveyed Saturday by the NC leaders when they assembled and passed a series of resolutions? Can the NC do some explaining, please? |
