BJP tastes its own medicine, as Chander Mohan-led leaders protest against Govt | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 31: Dharnas, fasts, protests and rallies against the government were the weapons of state BJP for several years till it came to power in coalition with PDP three months back. The party today had a bitter taste of its own medicine when its senior leader Chander Mohan Sharma organised a protest rally to save Tawi river. The rally, held under the banner of Tawi Bachao Andolan, was also addressed and attended by BJP MLA and LA speaker Kavinder Gupta, MLA Gagan Bhagat and some other senior leaders of the saffron brigade. The protests and rallies by BJP activists suited the party when it was not in power but now holding such protest rallies goes against the coalition dharma. Since it is part of the government now, the leaders could have sit together and easily formulated a plan to cleanse Tawi river, also known as Suryaputri. One fails to understand why BJP activists protested against their own government and what was the need of doing so. Instead of wasting their time and energy on such a redundant exercise, it would have been better had they utilised their time in preparing a plan to cleanse Tawi river and then submitting it to the government for its approval. The party ministers can easily get approved such a project, using their good offices. But they did not do so and adopted the agitational path which is generally done by the opposition parties to get their demands conceded. In a statement issued to the press, BJP leaders claimed that Tawi Bachao Andolan had gained momentum. This they claimed on the basis of the rally that comprised of nearly 200 cars and 70 two-wheelers. It started from M A Stadium and, after passing through the main city bazaars, culminated at the stadium. The rallyists were shouting slogans, calling upon their own government to save the Suryaputri from garbage and encroachment. How ridiculous it sounds! Wouldn't it have been judicious on their part had they got issued an order from the government to ban dumping of garbage into the river and stop its further encroachment forthwith? Even a common man would laugh at the way the BJP leaders today tried to convey their concern to their own government about Tawi. They need to understand that they are part of government and protests and rallies do not at all suit them. Instead they should have approached the BJP ministers and those of the coalition partner to get their genuine and pro-people works done on priority. Otherwise, there is already a strong resentment against the saffron brigade for sacrificing the interests of Jammu. The BJP leaders said all the attempts to beautify the river were being foiled by the Kashmir-centric power circles. Before joining hands with PDP, they also considered it as Kashmir-centric. If they feel that PDP too was not in favour of beautification of the river, this was the right opportunity for them to prevail upon their coalition partner to get the needful done. They went to the extent of saying that shelving of the Tawi lake project was the glaring example of such a vicious mindset. Here public would differ with them. Since it is part of the government, it would now also be termed as a party to the anti-Jammu mindset. Tawi is a very sacred river and its cleansing would be welcome by one and all. It finds a conspicuous and reverent mention in the ancient scriptures and is hailed as the heavenly daughter of Sun God. It is the symbol of purity and identity of the Dogra region. But due to the apathy of the previous governments and its planned encroachment by some unscrupulous elements, this holy river is dying a slow death. The issue needs immediate attention of the government. |
