Fearing backlash Geelani disowns Lashkar-e-Islam | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 31: Fearing backlash and public outrage over the killings of innocents in Sopore town and communication breakdown in north Kashmir, the Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani took a U-turn on Sundayand asked the militants to identify Lashkar-e-Islam, which killed two civilians associated with the mobile companies in Sopore town. It's for the first time in the past 25 years Hurriyat hawk has called "terrorists" as "terrorists" and "murderers". "They (Lashkar-e-Islam) have murdered two people and have created confusion in the society," sources quoted Geelani as having said during a meeting held at his Hyderpora residence in uptown here on Sunday. What has forced Hurriyat hawk to change his stand and question the civilian killings has surprised many people. "Since the day two innocents were killed in Sopore by the militants there is strong resentment brewing against the separatists and militants in Kashmir. Mobile phones going off has caused huge losses to people and common man has been hit badly," said an analyst. He said that separatists and militants have realized that move has backfired. "Geelani slamming militants who killed two innocents and him disowning them seems to be a damage control exercise to prevent people from coming out on streets and protesting against the militants and separatists," he added. The analyst said that since 1990 hundreds of innocents were killed by militants but Geelani and his colleagues always defended their action by claiming that they were "Mukhbirs" (informers). "Geelani's U-turn this time is strategic move as he knows separatists and militants stand exposed before the masses," he added.
