SRINAGAR, May 31: Army today foiled the attempt of the militants to ambush an army hospital in the North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Three militants have been killed so far with the fire-fight still going on. The incident took place in the Tangdar sector of frontier Kupwara district in North Kashmir. This area has been in news for the infiltration bids carried out by the militants from time to time. Recently a militant and three security forces personnel were killed in a gun fight. Reports reaching here said that a group of six to seven heavily armed militants, who had reportedly sneaked into the valley last week, tried to storm army's 328 Field Surgical Centre (FSC) at Bukhayan village near Dak Banglow, Tangdar in the wee hours today. The surgical unit is about 200 yards from army's 104 Brigade. The militants fired indiscriminately towards the soldiers and tried to enter the hospital. The army men posted at the hospital repulsed the attack and returned the fire. In no time there was an encounter with both sides exchanging fire. It has been leant that the militants took shelter in the residential houses belonging to Muneer Sheikh Son of Mehboob Sheikh and Shakoor Sheikh Son of Ata Mohammad Sheikh adjacent to the Surgical Centre, while two others engaged the army in the gunfight. As the encounter turned fierce, additional reinforcement comprising of 30 commandos of 4 PARA were flown in by chopper. The commandos and the soldiers of other units including 3/1 GR, 20 RR, 12 Maratha and 26 Rajput laid a siege around the village to prevent militants from fleeing. The army personnel extended the surrender option to the militants but the same was turned down. Some of the residential houses in the area suffered damages following heavy motor shelling by army on militants. It is believed that the group of militants who carried out the attack today had entered the Valley through Darshan post along the LoC on May 25 and killed three army men of 3/1 GR and injured a Junior Commissioned officer (JCO). One unidentified militant had also been killed in the encounter. A defence official here said that three militants have been killed in the ongoing encounter. The defence official said that militants have taken eight civilians hostage, while five others have been evacuated by the army. Besides the hostage crisis, heavy rains, thundershowers and lightening occurred in the area that has hampered the operation. It has also been learnt that three rifles have been recovered along with as many bodies. However, choppers are hovering over the nearby areas in order to track down the militants and security forces are trying to ensure that the militants don't reach any nearby village. |
