Srinagar, June 1: Hours after the attack by unknown gunmen on mobile tower at Habba Kadal here, Kashmir BSNL Tower Landlords Welfare Organization today decided to shutdown operation of BSNL towers. Shahoo Imtiyaz sustained injuries when the grenade was lobbed at the tower installed in his courtyard at Gudood Bagh area. The attack, first of its kind in the Srinagar city, happened around noon. "In an emergency meeting, our organization unanimously decided to shutdown the operation of BSNL towers across the Valley installed in our premises or lands. We are going to close their operations from Monday evening," said Shabir Ahmad Lone, president of the organization, who also submitted a written statement to a local newspaper in Srinagar. Communication system has been badly affected following a spate of attacks against telecom employees and those who have rented out space for installation of cell phone towers in north Kashmir in past ten days. Two people have already died and three others injured in such attacks in north Kashmir. The first attack was carried out on a BSNL franchise shop at New Colony in Sopore, killing an employee and injuring two others. In the second attack, 62-year-old man who had got a mobile tower installed at his house in Dooru Sopore was killed. Gunmen also shot at another person in Pattan who had installed mobile tower at his house. An unknown group calling itself 'Lashkar-e-Islam' had taken the responsibility of the attacks. The group had warned mobile operators to close down by pasting threatening posters in Sopore town. The posters recently surfaced in south Kashmir as well, triggering panic among service providers and common people as well. |
