World Environment Day celebrated across Jammu

Jammu, June 5: Various organizations celebrated World Environment Day across the Jammu Province. The World Environment Day was celebrated by District Pollution Control Board here today at Community Hall Ramban whereat students drawn from local schools participated.
The eco club of Model Academy in collaboration with World Wide Fund (WWF) celebrated World Environment Day in the school premises. The day started with various activities like tying Rakhies to the trees, hugging the trees and planting saplings in the school campus. The drive started with Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER, planting the first sapling followed by the plantation drive by the students. Dr. Adit Gupta was accompanied by Rupa Gupta Management Representative, Mrs. Usha Gadoo Officiating Principal, Mrs. Manjari Sehgal, Academic Manager, Mrs. ManjuVali, Convener Co- Curricular Activities, Mrs. Poonam Gupta Incharge Eco club and all the house incharges. Dr. Adit Gupta while interacting with the students stressed that we need to protect our environment and save it from getting polluted.
Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu in collaboration with AKKA, Jammu celebrated World Environment Day in University of Jammu.
The function was inaugurated by Prof RD Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, chief guest on the occasion, by planting an Amla sapling in the department premises. The faculty and staff also planted Amla saplings around the department to commemorate this day. Speaking on the occasion, Prof R D Sharma, encouraged the students and scholars to keep the university clean by organizing cleanliness activities within the campus atleast once in a week and also include volunteers from other departments in such activities.
A debate competition was also held in which students expressed their views on importance of environment conservation. MLA Ramban Neelam Langeh was the chief guest. District Development Commissioner, Ramban, Farooq Shah Bukhari, Divisional Officer of PCB, Chief Medical Officer and other senior functionaries of district administration were also present.
World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5 by the United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness about environment issues. The objective of celebrating this day is to mitigate the impact of global warming. The programme was coordinated by Kuldeep Bhan Divisional Officer of Pollution Control Board Ramban. In his address, the Chief Guest stressed the need for time-bound commitment to minimize the air and water pollution.
Shakti Punj, NGO a social organization Hiranagar celebrated environment day it in front of tehsil office Hiranagar. The volunteers of the organization displayed banners , placards and pamphlets depicting the importance of water and plants. The theme for 2015 is "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with care." President of the organization Kuljeet Singh Bablu said as the people consume far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provides.
Rail Wheel Factory observed World Environment Day today highlighting various initiatives taken by it and industry trends in the field. During this, environmental management in steel industry particularly RWF, Hospital Waste Management & Water Management were discussed.
The keynote address was delivered by P. R Dasgupta, IAS (Retd.), Distinguished Fellow & Director, Southern Regional Centre, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Bangalore. Also, Sri. Pankaj Jain, General Manager, RWF, addressed the gathering.
A street play in kannada on protection of environment by the employees of Rail Wheel Factory and drawing and painting competition by children of Kendriya Vidyalaya, RWF were also being organized.
The World Environment Day was celebrated by District Pollution Control Board at Community Hall Ramban here today.
According to press release, MLA Ramban Neelam Langeh was the chief guest on the occasion. DDC Ramban Farooq Shah Bukhari, Divisional Officer of PCB, CMO, EO Ramban besides students from various schools was also present on the occasion.
Braving inclement weather and drizzle drenched morning, more than 100 enthusiastic students of Eco club Govt Girls High School, Amirakadal under the patronage of principal school Romana Qazi participated in 356th Tree Talk and Eco-Walk in Sir Mohammad Iqbal Park Srinagar.
Invited guest speaker and well known Tree Talk crusader, O P Sharma Vidyarthi while sharing his vision on native trees of Kashmir highlighted that fruit extract of Apple thorn or Hawthorn Craetegus songarica called Ringkul in Kashmiri is useful to prevent heart attacks ,purple berries of Indian Poke.
