Pro-Khalistan slogans in Srinagar, Taliban posters appear in Sopore | Little known militant outfit threatens petrol pumps, non-locals | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 5: Even as the members of Sikh community here Friday raised "Khalistan Zindabad" slogans to protest the killing of a youth Jagjit Singh in police firing in Jammu yesterday, the fear of infamous Taliban who in 2014 killed over 140 schoolchildren in Pakistan, has gripped north Kashmir's Sopore. When Sikh protesters in the summer capital, staged protest in Srinagar, Tehreek-e-Taliban Jammu & Kashmir, feared to be chapter of parent outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, surfaced in the apple town of Sopore, some 50 miles from Srinagar. The militant posters warned of attacks on petrol pumps, liquor stores, cable operators and apartments rented out to non-local laborers. Officials said it is for the first time that posters of this international militant outfit have surfaced in Kashmir. The posters, softcopy of which lies with Early Times, warned petrol pump owners of dire consequences if they refueled vehicles belonging to police or other security forces. People resorting to gambling or encouraging it have also been threatened. "Change yourselves for better and stop these immoral activities within seven days," the posters have warned. "Action will be taken against those households who give shelter to Bihari labourers," the posters have warned. Without making any direct claim on the attacks on telecom installations, the group, through these posters, said: "Action will be taken against people the way it is being taken against telecom installations." Over the past around a month, tensions have already risen in north Kashmir where militants attacked mobile communication network while two persons were killed. A grenade attack was also carried out on a mobile tower in Habba Kadal locality of Srinagar. Security analysts have been saying that the state police was taking things lightly at this critical juncture. They said it often happened that when militants had a field day, police was busy hosting sports activities. Amid this all, opposition National Conference has trained its guns on the PDP-BJP coalition. The NC Working President and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah whose tenure saw bloodbath on Kashmir streets in 2010 is now onto preaching what he couldn't practice when in power. "Pakistani flags in Kashmir & Khalistani posters in Jammu. This wasn't the regional balance we were promised by the Modi-Mufti accord," Omar wrote on micro blogging website, Twitter. A senior police official on the other hand said the veracity of the Taliban posters was yet to be ascertained. "Things are being probed. We're trying to ascertain the facts," the police official said. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is the militant outfit which claimed to have carried out deadliest attacks in Pakistan and also took responsibility for the attack on the Army school in Peshawar where over 140 children were killed. Even as the tensions mounted, police intensified its sporting activities. As per a police handout Deputy Inspector General of Police Central Kashmir Sh. Ghulam Hassan Bhat today flagged off a youth trekking expedition to Pahalgam. "The trekking expedition has been organized by Srinagar police in association with Anantnag police and JKTDC to promote adventure sports among the youth of the state," the police handout said. |
