Govt to shame big names involved in power theft | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 19: The State government has decided to prepare a list of major defaulter of power who are resorting to its theft in connivance with the field staff of the electricity department and make it public to shame them. According to the sources the decision taken in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and attended by the Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, who holds the power department. According to the sources, the list was prepared by the power department in both the regions of the State: Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said since the list includes major industrialists and hoteliers who had political influence and also have been funding the parties the CM was given the list to take a final call. Sources said the since the time has come to take the call he directed to go ahead with publication of the list along with the amount to recovered. "It was big decision by the CM as these were very influential people with deep pockets and had been having their way by bribing the officials. But, since the CM and the BJP too had publicly announced to give the accountable and corruption free government, the decision was taken despite many pressures. The rot has bee rooted out from the top and that 's the way to restore confidence of the ordinary people in the system and this is what this government is trying to do," said an official privy to the development. According to the sources the power department is also mooting a proposal to take strict disciplinary action who had allowed the loot of the electricity and could even make a provision to collect the interest from the official who are to be found guilty. "The theft could not have taken place without the connivance of the officials so they must also share the blame and the penalty . A proposal is under way to recover a part of the arrears to be collected of the electricity tariff from the PDD officials and it will involved not only from the posting of the present officials but also of the past," said the official. |
