Uttam Chand is back from ‘protest’ leave, awaits next posting | While PHQ wants to re-appoint him as SSP, Jammu, BJP is opposed to it | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 19: Uttam Chand, who was transferred on June 5 last, following the controversy over removal of Bhinderwale's posters from Satwari area and the killing of a youth in police firing on violent protesters, has come back from his "protest" leave and is awaiting his next posting. While police headquarters (PHQ) wants to re-appoint him as SSP, Jammu, at least two BJP ministers are opposed to it and have almost made up their mind to appoint their own police officer as SSP, Jammu, according to police sources. So, it is now virtually PHQ versus BJP. The post, which fell vacant after the transfer of Uttam Chand over a month and a half back, is in the additional charge of ASP (rural). While at least two BJP veterans want the officer of their choice to be posted as SSP, Jammu, there are some SSPs who are also making all out efforts for a posting in Jammu. Police sources said the BJP veterans had proposed the names of two police officers for their posting as SSP, Jammu. While one of them was presently heading a district in Jammu region, the other is posted in a separate police wing in Kashmir. "While one is the close relative of a serving police officer, who is also trying for his posting in Jammu, the other is politically well connected and has already served in Jammu as DSP and SP," the sources added. Sources said the police headquarters was interested more in reappointing Uttam Chand as SSP, Jammu. "In case he refuses to again take over as SSP, Jammu, the names of other competent police officers will be considered for the post," the sources added. The police headquarters was also said to have apprised the home department of its decision in this regard. This was the reason behind the delay in filling up the vacant post of SSP, Jammu, sources said. Sources, however, said that whoever was posted as SSP, Jammu, he should be a man of integrity. Sources said while two to three ministers expressed their displeasure over the reappointment of Uttam Chand as SSP, Jammu, a senior police officer had made it clear to them that if officers were punished like this for maintaining law and order situations, they would in future hesitate from putting their best to control such situations. |
