Oops! Omar missed to host Iftaar party | NC old guards feel embarrassed | | Abdul Majid
Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 19: While people in Kashmir are busy celebrating Eid-Ul Fitr, the Iftaar parties thrown in the previous fasting month of Ramazan by the who's who, have left behind some food for thought. Reasons: Former Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah missed to host any Iftaar party something which is making his senior party colleagues feel embarrassed for having "discarded a valuable decades old tradition". In Kashmir, from Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to Governor NN Vohra to Director General of Police K Rajendra, almost everyone threw mouth watering Iftaar parties, where people from various walks of life including politicians, officials, civil society members and media persons were invited. Even as Omar himself was a prominent face at such sunset functions including the one thrown by Army's 15 Corps on July 15 at Rangreth, he remained conspicuous for not hosting the feast himself. Observers said inviting for Iftaar in Muslim dominated Kashmir had been a tradition with NC, the state's oldest political party. Speculations are rife that Omar forgot to plan any Iftaar get-together while his senior colleagues deliberately avoided reminding him on the crucial issue only to further expose his under-performance as the head of the party, which has been witnessing downfall after a defeat in the last year Parliament elections in Kashmir and losing in the Assembly polls to PDP five of the total of eight seats in Srinagar. Some senior NC leaders, who claimed to have "felt embarrassed for not upholding the decades old tradition", are understood to have expressed their dismay before party patron and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah while greeting him on Eid. "We conveyed to Farooq Sahib that hosting Iftaar was a golden opportunity for us to go for some face improvement before various sections of the society. But our failure on this front because of his son has further distanced us from the society which has already taught us a lesson in the last elections," said a senior NC leader, asking not to be identified. "This fresh failure has further dented our reputation but now it's like crying over the spilt milk as we'll have to wait for one year to rectify our mistake," he added. Omar has often been accused of "sheer arrogance" by his senior party colleagues, while veterans like Dr Mehboob Beg parted ways from NC to join PDP. "A politician has to be visionary, primarily patient to listen to others' viewpoint, but he has taken NC for a ride because of his alleged inexperience and reluctance to learn," the NC leader asserted. But, did Omar forget to host Iftaar party or was it his deliberate attempt remains a mystery as despite repeated attempts he couldn't be contacted for comments. |
