Srinagar, July 19 : The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir, remained closed for the third day day due to landslides, triggered by cloudburst and heavy rain. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Ladakh region and passengers, were stranded on the highway at different places on either side of the Zojila tunnel. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, supported by the Army has already started operation to put through the lifeline to Ladakh. Road was damaged at Kullan area on the highway in Kangan in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal, resulting in closure of Srinagar-Sonamarg road, where large number of vehicles were stranded. Majority landslides were cleared and the highway could be put through later today, a traffic police officials said. He said only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations before allowing any fresh vehicle from Srinagar or Leh side. The highway was closed July 17 following landslides, triggered by cloudburst and heavy rain in Kullan area on this side of the Zojila pass. |
