Geelani goes mum after getting passport | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 24: The otherwise firebrand Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has gone mum after getting passport. Perhaps he's busy packing his luggage for trips abroad. Since July 22 when Geelani got the passport, he has not uttered a word which could go against the government by his name. No statement been reported from Geelani's himself, neither on arrest of some youth in south Kashmir, nor on Rajauri violence, which separatists are racing to express concern on. Hurriyat insiders said Geelani is playing safe this time and won't issue any controversial statement under his name so that his travel plans don't run into any rough weather. "No statement is coming from Geelani but only from his spokesman," confirmed a media person. It is for the first time that Geelani has been seen personally silent over reports of alleged communal violence even as his arch rival Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have been on the forefront of condemnations. With Geelani having been silent the powerful Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries on the other hand has called for a valley-wide strike on Saturday while Malik was first to support it. Today as people started questioning Geelani's credentials after having been given the Indian passport, the Hurriyat leader got a news floated that he was planning not to use the passport. But his move has failed to impress the people who say "Huriyat people are selfish and exploit Kashmir for their personal gains." "Why was Geelani silent for the past three days, when he never behaves so? This has a simple reply that his personal interests are safe this time," posted a netizen on Facebook. Geelani's daughter, Farhat Geelani who is settled in Saudi Arabia, had fallen severely ill following which the Hurriyat (G) Chairman applied for passport. After two months, the government finally issued a nine-month validity passport to ailing octogenarian leader. It will be for the first time in the past two decades that Geelani will be allowed to travel abroad. In the past, Geelani was refused a passport thrice in 2007, 2008 and 2011. The issuance of the passport comes after Geelani completed the form and mentioned Indian in the nationality section of the passport form. Although he later said, "I am not by birth an Indian. It is a compulsion." |
