| Lalkar Rally, candle light march, shutdown | | BJP in deep trouble | | ET Report
JAMMU, July 24: Five significant developments took place in one day on Thursday and all of them suggested that the BJP is in for a bigger trouble in Jammu region.
One, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA), Jammu, unanimously resolved to strike work across Jammu region for a week starting from today and the resolve was coupled with a warning that it would go in for an indefinite bandh in case an appropriate order on the issue of AIIMS was not issued latest by July 30. Senior advocate and BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi and others of his ilk disappointed the BJP leadership. For, it was expecting them to play a role that would weaken the JKHCBA and help it puncture the ongoing movement in Jammu. Convinced that they stood isolated in the bar, they thought it wise to stay away from the crucial meet and they are today not being held in high esteem by the people of Jammu region. Sethi had, in fact, dissociated from the JKHCBA-led AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC) on the plea that the Bar Association had involved politicians in the movement and completely overlooked the fact that he himself was a chief spokesperson of the roundly condemned BJP. Most of the lawyers are associated with one or the other political party. The BJP leadership has been saying that the ongoing agitation in Jammu has been sponsored by the "defeated" parties.
Two, the ACC decided to meet on Friday to chalk out future course of action with a view to intensifying the ongoing movement for the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu. The ACC today met, accused the BJP of betraying and cheating people of Jammu region and not only gave a 72-hour-long bandh call, but also decided to organize Lalkar Rally on Saturday and another candle light protest march before July 30. The bandh would on July 31 and August 1 and 2. Earlier on June 18, the ACC had withdrawn the three-day-long bandh call after two BJP ministers gave a written commitment to the ACC that they would obtain an appropriate order from the Government of India latest by July 20, which didn't happen. The non-fulfillment of the promise is termed across Jammu region "a breach of trust", an "act of political dishonesty" and an act for which the BJP will have to pay through its nose. Interestingly, the chairman of the ACC Abhinav Sharma described the "today's meeting of the ACC as decisive". The most significant aspect of the today's ACC meeting within the premises of the High Court was that all the decisions were taken instantly and unanimously. The meeting room was jam packed and those who turned up for the meeting, including lawyers, were seething with anger. Not a single participant supported the BJP or asked the ACC leadership to give the BJP some more time.
Three, the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) activists held protest demonstration in the University of Jammu against the BJP, burnt its and its ministers' effigies and shouted slogans against them. They dismissed the BJP as a party of cheaters and bluffers. The JKNPP has also threatened to launch jail bharo agitation on the issue.
Four, the Congress, which didn't leave any stone unturned to damage people of Jammu region for decades, extended support to the ACC and threatened a movement against the BJP. It said the BJP has betrayed the people of Jammu region and it will extend its support to the ACC so that Jammu region got an AIIMS. The Congress has been fishing in troubled waters in Jammu since days now and accusing the BJP on a daily basis of playing foul with the people of Jammu region and playing second fiddle to Kashmiri leadership, the charge the BJP used to level against the Congress when it was in the opposition.
Very significantly, today, hundreds of Congress workers under the leadership of a number of former ministers, today held an impressive demonstration against the BJP, joined the ACC-sponsored hunger-strikers and stage dharna on the Tawi Bridge, which resulted in huge traffic jams on both sides of the bridge.
Five, the JKNPP urged the people of Jammu region to get united so that the state is bifurcated and Jammu region became free of Kashmiri domination and Kashmiri hegemony. In fact, it held a rally in Kathua and demanded bifurcation of state into Jammu Pradesh and Kashmir Valley. Speaking to the party workers, Bhim Singh, chief of JKNPP, accused the coalition government of having "miserably failed" in fulfilling the aspirations of people and asserted that the bifurcation of the state into Jammu Pradesh and Kashmir Valley was the only solution if the government was serious about providing justice to all regions of the State. Not only this, the Panthers condemned the BJP for its failure to deliver the promise on AIIMS.
All this shows that the people cutting across party lines have turned against the BJP. It is important to note that the ACC is an amalgam of more than 120 non-political organizations some of which are very powerful. The BJP leadership needs to appreciate the developing situation in the region and nothing would be more appropriate then that it should announce an AIIMS for Jammu before July 30. There is the possibility of Jammu region witnessing an indefinite bandh after July 30. |
