| Mufti Govt likely to reopen cases against separatists | | | Peerzada Ummer

Srinagar, July 24: The PDP-led coalition government in J&K is likely to reopen cases against separatist leaders which are gathering dust in the Home Department.
Top sources told Early Times that the Centre has sent a strong message to the state dispensation, asking it to speed up its efforts against "growing radicalisation in the Kashmir Valley."
After Pakistani and ISIS flags surfaced in Srinagar and other areas of the Valley, the Union Home Ministry has reprimanded the state government over its failure to keep the situation under control.
"Though there are clear indications about the involvement of some separatist leaders in staging protests and prompting youth to hoist Pakistani flags, there is no action from the government. Rather we can say that the government is virtually sleeping over the matter," sources said.
They said the Home Ministry has warned the state about the consequences of such activities if they are not stopped without further delay.
Following the rebuke from the Centre, sources said the state government may detain several key separatists against whom it has evidence of sponsoring stone pelting and flag hoisting in the valley.
"Though Masarat Alam has been arrested recently with just one case against him, there are scores of other cases slapped earlier against him which await action. Similarly, there are cases against many separatist leaders registered earlier but there was no action taken by the government. Those cases are likely to be reopened with fresh investigations being conducted soon," said an official of the Home Department wishing anonymity.
Sources said that Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who is also Kashmir's chief cleric has also been warned against allowing hoisting of any type of flag outside Srinagar's Jamia Masjid after Friday prayers.
There are also reports that the youth against whom serious charges of stone pelting stand registered during the past years shall be examined once again with a close vigil being kept on their activities.
The Centre, as per sources, has also taken strong note of the radicalisation of Kashmiri youth and the reports of youth joining militant ranks.
It was also leant that the government is alerting the security grid with the spy agencies being tasked to find where from the youth are lured to waive ISIS and Pakistan flags repeatedly and why no action has been taken so far by the government.
Also, with the increase in the number of militants in Kashmir, security agencies are being directed to maintain a close coordination with the state police.
"What we are concerned about is the abrupt increase in the number of active militants in Kashmir. Now we have seen educated youth joining the militancy, and such trend has to be stopped with most serious efforts," sources added. |
