Flood-hit families of Mendhar await relief, rehab | | | Bijay Charak Early Times Report
Poonch, July 24: At least 30 families of Mendhar, Poonch, devastated by flash floods earlier this week, are waiting for relief and rehabilitation. Such is the apathy shown by district administration towards the victims that Deputy Commissioner Poonch Nasir Ahmed Wani has not visited the area so far because road connectivity is yet to be restored. Jehangir Rashid, a resident of Chhatral, told Early Times that recent cloudburst inflicted huge damage in Chhatral and Kalaban of tehsil Mendhar. At least 30 houses, cattle shed, shops and vehicles were destroyed, Rashid said, "but surprisingly two days after the tragedy the victims are yet to be rehabilitated." Rashid said the district administration has provided tents and utensils to two families out of the 30 homeless families. On Thursday, few officials visited the area to review the situation. The SDM Mendhar donated Rs 5000 to few families and assured them that the administration would provide immediate relief including ration, utensils, kerosene oil to the affected families. "The officials know that we people are living in far-flung areas and the roads have been badly damaged due to landslides," said another resident said "But still we have been totally neglected by the government." The people urged Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to direct the administration officials to provide them with immediate relief and shelter. In charge Tehsildar Shahzad Khan admitted that that out of the 30 homeless families, the administration has so far given tents, utensils and other necessary items to two families. "The other families would also get the relief soon," Khan said. |
