Both action & reaction in Rajouri were deplorable | | | In Rajouri, the initial action was deplorable and the reaction was equally disgusting. A handful of youth torched an IS flag to counter those who have been waving Pakistani and IS flags in the valley during the last about a couple of months. Some people resented it, staged demonstrations and clashed with police on the plea that the flags, that had been burnt, carried some religious verses. This led to tension in Rajouri town. In fact the action and the reaction led to temporary destabilisation of peace in the border district of Rajouri but credit needs to be given to the district administration and the state government that it took immediate steps for defusing the situation. Credit also needs to be given to army that was called out by the civil administration. To keep the situation under control and keep a check on subversive elements, police and army had enforced curfew restrictions effectively. Yes, there may be some agencies involved in vitiating the atmosphere. Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was right when he talked about the mischief behind the incident. Instead of holding protests against the burning of IS flag only because it carried some religious verses, the people should have approached police and lodged an FIR against those who had hurt their sentiments. Azad rightly asked the state government to take necessary steps for rebuilding trust and confidence among different sections of society. He had also cautioned the people to see through the "sinister motives of devious forces" who are "hell-bent" to disturb peace and tranquility in the state. Well, the duty of the state government does not end with its success in tackling the situation. Its job is to set up people’s committees which would move from one place to another, exhorting people to beware of mischief mongers. The government's job is to bring about union of hearts. In addition to this, the intelligence agencies be asked to delve deep and identify elements and agencies that were behind the trouble. Already the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir hangs by a slender thread because of the activities of militants and separatists in Kashmir and if Rajouri-type incidents are allowed to take place it may create added problems for the government.
