Patriotic family: Undeterred by sacrifices of 2 family members, 3rd too has joined police | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 24: It is a family of patriots. Two of the members have already sacrificed their lives in encounters with militants but that has not stopped the third to join the police force. The first to lay down his life for the cause of nation was Inspector Uday Vir Singh. In 1993, he was fighting militants, who had taken position in a house at Trikuta Nagar, when he sustained critical injuries in a grenade explosion caused by the ultras. He was hospitalised but he breathed his last during treatment. Uday's elder son Shaili Singh then joined police force as an Inspector in 1997. Soon thereafter, he chose to serve in special operation group (SOG) of J&K police, which mainly has the responsibility of neutralising militants. On May 31, 2007, he rushed to Udrana in Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda, following inputs about the presence of a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander and his some accomplices there in a house. He was leading from the front. However, while trying to storm into the house, he was received with a volley of bullets by the militants, resulting in his death. After Shaili's cremation at the Shastri Nagar cremation ground here, when some senior police officers called on his elderly mother and asked her what the police department should do for her, she had replied that she wanted to send her another son to police. She was not scared of the sacrifices but only wanted her one more family member to serve the nation. Five months after the Shaili's sacrifice, his younger brother Rishi Singh joined police as Inspector. He is at present posted in CI (counter-intelligence) wing of the state police. The family has already been awarded several medals for bravery. |
