A team of officials of MVD, chased the trucks and seized trucks loaded with wheat bearing registration number PB 06M- 2370, PB06F- 9971, PB 06V -7475, PB06L -9581, PB06M- 2480. After brief checking, it was found that all the trucks were loaded from Punjab and moved towards Kashmir without legal documents to enter the state.
The trucks were loaded with 10 tonnes extra wheat bags besides capacity. The drivers accepted the overloading and unavailability of documents before media. Regional Transport Officer Lakhanpur Sheikh Nazir accepted the unavailability of documents and overloading but ironically discarded after few hours.
He later on said drivers did not have such documents but when the department contacted to owner/ dealer, the dealer produced the documents in morning and deposited relevant fine for overloading. The contradicted statement of RTO Lakhanpur pointed out the loopholes in inquiry and investigation of illegal smuggling that would continue for long. The smuggling after mutual understanding with Local bureaucrats no doubt a common phenomenon at Lakhanpur and another ways to enter the state as it would be highlighted several times in past.
RTO admitted loopholes in the working of Excise Department and MVD at numerous check posts and said Offenders used to enter the state from Lakhanpur but now they use another small entering points. He said the shortage of staff at MVD failed the monitor all the routes properly that gives chance to smugglers to enter the state. He said there are two Motor Vehicle Assistants who can't monitor dozens of entering points at a time. RTO said the vehicles would be released after brief verification as offender deposited fine fee.It is relevant to mention here that several trucks enter the state through different entering points except Lakhanpur at mid night without proper legal documents and permission. Shortage of staff at Excise and MVD can be brought troubles in days to come. The locals didn't deny the involvement of Excise and MVD officers in the menace and said the vehicles are being allowed to enter the state through several other entering points without checking proper.
