ReT screening row: Relatives, friends come to Edu Minister's rescue | | | Abdul Majid Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 7: For Education Minister, Naeem Akhter who is often accused of being "inexperienced and incompetent", taking Government decisions seems to be a family drama to which every near and dear can be party to. At a time when he has come under severe criticism over his diktat demanding screening of thousands of Rehbar-e-Taleem teachers, his relatives and friends have started coming out in his support on the social networking sites. His maternal uncle, Ayaz Rasool Nazki, who heads the Indian Council for Cultural Relations' Kashmir Chapter, is one of the key supporters. For the past two-three days Nazki, seems to be busy only defending his nephew on the Facebook. "ReT teachers screening test is ordered by the court. Those who oppose must approach the court for cancelling the directions. Why lock out the schools?" Nazki recently wrote. In his previous post, he said: "Akhter said that the Government is not against any section of teachers but is only focussed on providing better education as it forms the basis of success of a society." Akhter's another close relative, also tried to clear the air over Education Minister's decision, which has staked career of thousands of teachers. This uncle of Akhter posted: "Purpose of appointment of teachers is to provide employment to unemployed. In earlier times kings would create employment avenues by constructing useless buildings. That is the end of story." In another post the relative tried to defend Akhter further. "Successive Governments in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be accused of being used to enforce court orders, therefore what Education Minister is doing comes as a shock to those who are likely to get effected, if the court order is bad why don't aggrieved approach court," the relative said. But like Akhter his relatives too are often facing public fury online. Ayaz Rasool Nazki in another post said: "Look at the university teachers, they are supposed to cross tests/assessment/interview at every stage of promotion... Why are ReTs so scared about the test. I understand one who fails to clear the screening test continues as ReT till a subsequent test?" But he got a sarcastic reaction from his Facebook friend and retired Director Animal Husbandry Dr Muhammad Farooq who said why ReTs alone were being targeted when mess was prevalent in every government office. "Given the deterioration in services it is important to have such screening for all services including legislators, ministers etc lest we have nincompoop public servants in decision making positions!," Dr Farooq commented. As if relatives were not enough, some of his friends too have started lending a helping hand to support Education Minister's controversial decision. Prominent among them is industrialist Syed Shakeel Qalander who issued a statement in Srinagar dailies to shower praises on Akhter. Qalandar, as per a news agency, said "Civil Society would not object if government sincerely wants to take some corrective measures to put education system on the right track." "If you are capable and the best teacher then you should not hesitate and you should go for the screening test with confidence. If you are opposing the move, that means you are not capable and have been ruining the career of the students," Qalandar said. Other industrialists however accused Qalandar of keeping the Minister in good humour for personal benefits. "Qalandar Sahib wants to prove that he is friend in need," said a prominent industrialist associated with Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industries Kashmir. Amid raging controversy over the screening test of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers, Minister for Education has clarified that protests and sloganeering are not going to scare him as he is following court directions. "We are going ahead with the screening test. Some vested interests are raising hue and cry over the issue but the fact is society as a whole has been backing the government decision. All other sectors will flourish if education sector is set right. The sector is the base and we are not going to ignore this," the Minister said. While scores of ReTs were wounded in government action against protesting teachers in the past few days, observers opine that Akhter's misadventures were putting Mufti Sayeed led government to undue troubles. |
