Simple test to check 'intelligence' of Govt teachers snowballs into controversy | Political opponents get 'fodder' to target PDP-BJP Government | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 7: The recent decision of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) coalition government in the state to hold screening test for the 65,000 teachers has given 'fodder' to the political parties to target the coalition government even though the decision seems to be honest on the face of it. National Conference (NC) has been at the forefront of criticism with its working President and former chief minister Omar Abdullah taking pot shots at Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar who is said to be brain behind the decision of holding screening test for the government teachers. What seems to be a good idea of bringing about reforms in the education system in the state has snowballed into a controversy for the best reasons known to the 'opportunist' politicians. There seems to be no harm in evaluating the intelligence and diligence of the government teachers more so when there is cut throat competition in each and every aspect of life including the field of education. If students can be evaluated on regular basis during a year what is the problem in holding one time examination for teachers in order to check their efficiency. Political parties in the opposition across the country have a single point agenda and that is to criticize the government. But criticism for the sake of criticism leads to a situation where good decisions go down the drain. It is apprehended that same may happen to the government decision of conducting screening test for the government teachers. Ironically, the Jammu & Kashmir Teachers Forum (JKTF) instead of welcoming the government decision criticized the same. It is a harsh reality that that most of the teachers in the government schools are inefficient with very few among them being efficient. In such a situation holding the screening test assumes more significance. People in general believe that they are 'coerced' to admit their wards in the private schools since the teachers are much more qualified and dedicated there as compared to those working in the government sector. The parents prefer to pay hefty sum as donation, tuition fee and other miscellaneous expenses in private schools despite the fact that fees in government schools are less. Teachers in the private sector get paltry sum as salary while as their counterparts in the government sector get fatty monthly salaries. Pertinently, after the introduction of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) system in the state, the regular teachers in the government schools do less work with the major burden being handled by the ReT teachers who get few thousands as monthly salary. In most of the cases the ReT teachers are more qualified and intelligent than the regular teachers, but they are being forced to receive peanuts as monthly salary for the first five years. |
