Anantnag, August 9: Demanding tribal status, J&K Chopan Welfare Association (JKCWA) Sunday urged the government to keep its promise of granting tribal status to the shepherd community in the state. Addressing a press conference after a day long convention which was convened at Kokernag, association's Anantnag district president Gulzar Ahmad told media that the association will intensify its movement if government continued to ignore them. "Our association is non-political. However before assembly elections some veteran politicians had promised us that after coming to power they will reddress our problems and grant us the tribal status but it seems that the government has now forgot the promise as it has so far taken no initiative in this regard," he said. He said for the last six decades successive governments have been ignoring them as a result whole community is facing hardships. "Our Shephered (Chopan) community is facing same problems which nomads are facing as we too are living our lives on mountains and forests for a period of more than six months. Youngsters of our community aren't enough qualified because of the poverty within the community and so the community deserves the tribal status," he said. "The same community in our Jammu division has already been granted this status and there should be no discrimination as far as the status of community living in Kashmir is concerned," he added. He said that a resolution to grant Tribal Status to Shepherd (Chopan) community was passed in the state Legislative Assembly in 2010 but the government has not taken any cognizance of that resolution so far. "Granting Tribal Status to Chopan Community is a long pending demand which needs consideration," he said. Earlier, addressing the convention, he said that community is ready to intensity its movement if the government continued to ignore their genuine demand. Convention was attended by a large number of people including youngsters.
