Early Times Report
jAMMU, Aug 9: A Government of India survey has ranked Jammu in the bottom of the list of 'cleanest' cities of the country, causing major embarrassment to the state. In fact, none of the twin capitals of J&K has found a place in the list of top 100 performing cities under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). The survey conducted by Ministry of Urban Development for 2014-15 reveals that cities in JK were performing poorly under the centrally sponsored schemes. A total of 476 cities of the country were surveyed and ranking was based on the extent of open defecation and solid waste management practices. Srinagar has been ranked 152nd, and shockingly Jammu found a place in the bottom of the list with ranking 427. More than 1.2 million households in Jammu and Kashmir are without toilets, and J&K did not use about 96% of the money granted by New Delhi on sanitation programme for 2014-15. The state used only Rs 4.66 crore of Rs 121.52 crore sanctioned by the GoI. The survey reports stated that the city of Mysore leads the cities with minimal open defecation and extensive adoption of solid waste management practices. The top 10 ranked cities are Mysore, Thiruchirapalli, Navi Mumbai, Kochi, Hassan, Mandya, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Halisahar and Gangtok, in that order. Damoh (Madhya Pradesh) came at the bottom of 476 cities, preceded by Bhind (MP), Palwal and Bhiwani, both in Haryana, Chittaurgarh (Rajasthan), Bulandshahar (UP), Neemuch (MP), Rewari (Haryana), Hindaun (Rajasthan) and Sambalpur in Odisha at 467th rank. |
