2 Pak militants killed as troops foil infiltration bid | In another incident, TA soldier sacrifices life, 2 others injured | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Aug 9: Foiling an infiltration bid, troops shot dead two Pakistani militants in an encounter near the LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara on Sunday morning. A TA jawan also lost his life while two others got injured in an overnight gun battle with militants in Tangdhar sector here. According to a senior police officer, in a fresh encounter army on Saturday night intercepted a group of militants near the LoC (Line of Control) in Keran sector of Kupwara district, triggering a fierce gun battle that lasted till Sunday morning in which two Pakistani militants and one army soldier were killed. "The alert troops guarding the LoC noticed militants who were trying to sneak into this side of the Line of Control (LoC) near Jumagund Nar in Keran sector. The troops challenged the militants who resorted in indiscriminate firing. The troops returned the fire and in the ensuing fresh encounter, two militants were killed," the officer said. The bodies of the killed Pak militants had been recovered along with two AK-47 rifles. However later in a day an additional reinforcement of 15 RR and 3/3GR also rushed to the spot to help the troops deployed near the fence, said the officer. In an another encounter at Tangdhar sector, army on Saturday night intercepted a group of 3-4 heavily armed militants near the LoC in Tangdhar sector, triggering a fierce encounter that lasted till Sunday morning in which one soldier of Territorial Army (TA) was killed and two troops were injured. The officer said that the troops confronted a group of militants moving close to the LoC. The militants were asked to surrender but they opened fire, he said, adding the troops retaliated and an encounter started. However, he said that in the gun battle, "One solider made the supreme sacrifice while two others were injured." He said, "TA soldier Bashir Ahmad War who was handling a sniffer dog during the operation in the area was intercepted by a group of militants, he said, adding that they (militants) later took soldier along with sniffer dog "hostage" inside the forest area. He was shot dead later. The militants also killed the sniffer dog, he said. The militants also opened indiscriminate fire upon the forces, resulting in injuries to para commandos -- Havaldar Rajender Singh (33) and Lias Naik Kowal Ram (30) -- who were immediately airlifted to army's 92 base hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment. Meanwhile, a top police official said that a tight cordon of the whole area is still in place and the search operation was going on till the last reports came in. |
