Rahul pitches for comprehensive relief package for flood victims | Asks Mufti Sayeed to play 'proactive' role in getting funds | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SOPORE (BARAMULLA), Aug 27: Vice President, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Rahul Gandhi today asked Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to seek a comprehensive package for the people of state more so for those affected by the devastating deluge of September 2014. Addressing a Congress workers rally at Dak Bungalow here, Rahul said that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state has failed to address the genuine concerns of the people. He said the government has failed to deliver and as such people have lost hope with the system. "Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, but he has failed to get a package for the flood hit people of the state. He should impress upon the BJP government at the Centre so that the package is announced without any further delay and there is some light at the end of the tunnel," said AICC Vice President. Rahul referred to the amount sanctioned so far for the flood hit people of the state as 'packaging' and not package. He said the peanuts paid by the people at helm have failed to satiate the demands of the masses hit badly by flood. He alleged that both PDP and BJP are running the government without any direction or conviction. "I visited the areas of Poonch district in Jammu division that have been pounded by shelling from across the border. The people living there are in pathetic condition and the irony is that nobody is listening to their woes. They have been left to the mercy of the God and it is really painful as well as pathetic," said AICC Vice President. Rahul said that people living in the border areas want that they are insured and bunkers are set up so that they can protect themselves as and when the shelling takes place. He pitched for honourable and respectable compensation to the people who have been badly hit by the shelling from the other side of Line of Control. Referring to the alleged disrespect shown to the Congress flags in Srinagar, the AICC Vice President said that such things don't matter since Congress is an ideology and not only a political party. He said Congress stands for its principles of peace, compassion, love, brotherhood and bonhomie among people living across the country. "We respect people irrespective of the region they belong to and the religion they practise. These are our guiding principles and we cannot compromise on them whatever the situation. The farmers living across the country are a worried a lot since the Prime Minister wants to grab their land by any means. At the same time people belonging to different sections of the society are worried since the government has failed them," said Rahul. Referring to his interaction with Saffron growers at Pampore earlier, the AICC Vice President said that these Saffron farmers hailed the previous UPA government for providing irrigation facilities to them. He said the new dispensation at the centre has failed to market Saffron as was envisaged by the previous central government. The rally was also addressed by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz, Ambika Soni and MLA Sopore, Abdul Rashid Dar. |
