Second list in limbo, corrupt officials get reprieve | CS's step down hits war against corruption | | ET Report Srinagar, Aug 27: The Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, Iqbal Khanday, opting for voluntary retirement could prove to be a boon for the corrupt officials whose names figure in the second list prepared by the State Vigilance Organization (SVCO) and other agencies. It's in place to mention here that government had constituted the Chief Secretary led high level panel to finalize the list of corrupt officials framed by the SVO. The much hyped panel had cleared the first list of more than 60 officials two months ago and they were shown the exit door. There were speculations making rounds that the SVO and other agencies have already prepared the second list of corrupt officials and it has been forwarded to the CS led panel. Now with committee becoming headless there is every possibility about process coming to a grinding halt. Sources told Early Times the Chief Secretary opting for voluntary retirement could provide a breathing space to the officials whose names figure in the list and they can avail this opportunity to use their influence and get their names deleted. "As its many officials have been making rounds of the residences of the ministers and other dignitaries," sources added. The Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday, who was likely to retire in November this year, stirred the hornet's nest on Tuesday by announcing that he won't attend the office from August 31 onwards and his notice period be waived off. Insiders claimed that the second list of the corrupt officials is lying in the Chief Minister's Secretariat. "The corrupt officials were able to save their skin due to many factors. May be Chief Secretary calling off the day could expedite the process and many heads can roll if all goes well and the list is not sabotaged by the people who are working overtime to ensure that war against corruption is put into abeyance," said a source. He claimed that "It seems Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is fighting alone against the entire system." Sources said that War against Corruption has hit a road block and the Chief Minister, according to the sources, is unhappy about how the things are shaping up. "Soon after the first list of the corrupt officials was released, the Chief Minister had asked his close aides to prepare another list fast so that the notion about government acting against a few people is dispelled," the source added. He said that government acting tough against the government officials who have acquired assets disproportionate to their sources of income had created ripples in the entire bureaucratic set up. " The Chief Secretary bowing out can further delay the process and provide time to those officials who are working overtime to ensure that they become close to politicians who can save them at the later stages," the source claimed. He said if the second list of the corrupt officials remains under cold storage for some more time it could lead to the entire process being called off and corrupt people would get one more chance to make the hay as the sun would shine. |
