Congress workers leave Rahul Gandhi red faced | Workers rally a 'flop' show, attended by few hundreds | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report sopore (baramulla), Aug 27: Vice President, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Rahul Gandhi faced an embarrassing situation here in this town of North Kashmir after scores of Congress workers left the venue without listening to his speech during a Congress workers rally. As soon as AICC Vice President started delivering his speech, Congress workers in good number stood up and started leaving from the compound of Dak Bungalow located few metres away from the Sopore hospital. These Congress workers listened to the speeches of Congress leaders like Abdul Rashid Dar, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and Ambika Soni, but did not deem it fit to listen to Rahul. Not to talk of the Congress workers sitting in the back rows some of them present in the front row could also be seen leaving the venue of rally. This led to embarrassment of senior Congress leaders including some former ministers who could be seen sharing the podium with the AICC Vice President. Personnel attached with the security wing of Jammu & Kashmir Police stopped these Congress workers and did not allow them to come out of the venue. Some of the workers including females could be seen arguing with the security personnel as they wanted to move out for different reasons. "I have been waiting here since 10 in the morning and want to go out to attend to the Nature's call. The security personnel are not allowing me to come out and as such we have been kept hostage by them. They are not ready to listen and as such I cannot come out whatever the emergency situation," said Ghulam Rasool, a Congress worker. As these Congress workers were not allowed to leave the venue they could be seen gossiping in groups. There was chaos and confusion in the rally and people could be seen moving freely as if some ordinary event was going on. It seemed that the Congress workers held the local Congress leaders in high esteem than the Vice President of AICC. Although, the Congress leaders claimed that the function was a Congress workers convention, but the presence of school children wearing uniforms belied their claims. Some little kids could also be seen present in the function and as such the claim of Congress leaders that it was a party convention proved to be a 'hoax'. "Welkin school located in the vicinity of this venue has been sealed couple of days back and the education of children studying there has been badly affected. High profile visits like this one have always created problems for the people and the commoners have to bore the brunt of such visits," said Hilal Ahmad, a local while narrating his tale to Early Times. Yet another youth present in the rally said that police personnel did not allow an expectant lady to move towards the Sopore hospital since they had erected barricades on the main road. "The vehicle in which the lady was present was stopped on the pretext that the driver was not carrying the license. This was just a lame excuse and nothing more," said the youth. The people of the Sopore town who were very much busy with their daily chores felt relieved as soon as the chopper carrying Rahul took off from the compound of Welkin Educational Trust. The Congress rally was attended by few hundred workers with the number not exceeding two thousand. |
